Blockchains need a software update to account for the new risks posed by adversarial quantum computers... ⚙
A quantum computer with enough qubits can calculate the private key (password) of a crypto wallet through its public key (address)! 🔓
This diminishes the legitimacy of the blockchain and all applications built on top (DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, Play-to-Earn, etc).
Each qubit stores twice the amount of information, leading to far greater performance than classical computers.
When tasked with the challenge of factoring a 2048-bit number, a quantum computer would complete the task in a fraction of the time: half a day vs 317 trillion years!
What are quantum computers? 🖥
Quantum computers solve certain problems exponentially faster than classical computers.
How do they do this? 🤔
Information is stored in quantum bits (qubits), capable of storing far more info than classical bits.
Breaking public-key cryptography—fundamental to Bitcoin—is possible on a future quantum computer that runs on the cloud.
Quantum computers can run Shor’s algorithm, an efficient quantum algorithm for factoring integers.
