Binance reports a $6.3 billion theft. Polymarket users lose an estimated $2.7 million. Both platforms promise to cover the losses.
The separate breaches on 29 October raise a question that goes beyond security: how much customer protection can commercial self-interest deliver?
Binance says it has prepared more than $6.34 billion in company funding to cover stolen assets. Polymarket confirmed a third-party provider compromise, temporarily halted trading on its international platform and promised to make affected users whole.
Reimbursement has a clear commercial purpose. Customers left with unrecovered losses have an immediate reason to leave. Absorbing those losses can help preserve the trading relationships, liquidity and future revenue that support the business.
That alignment can benefit customers. Its limit is the operator’s ability to pay while managing the breach, restoring services and potentially meeting withdrawal demand.
These commitments deserve scrutiny through completed compensation, clear coverage and effective remediation. They do not establish that exchanges are universally safer than self-custody, or that voluntary protection replaces enforceable rights.
The custody debate needs to examine both who controls the assets and who can bear the loss when something fails.

Singapore Police Say Ledger crypto Wallets Sold at Local Retailers Contained Malicious Hardware Implants
Singapore police said on October 28 that some Ledger cryptocurrency hardware wallets purchased from local retailers contained malicious hardware implants capable of stealing users' recovery phrases or private keys. At least two cases have been reported since September 10, resulting in losses of approximately S$3.5 million ($2.7 million). Ledger, a leading French hardware wallet manufacturer, is reviewing the affected cases, while police investigations remain ongoing.
Who will control the market for tokenised securities?
DTCC, OKX and ICE represent competing interests in custody, settlement and distribution.
The prize is control of financial infrastructure and the revenue it generates.

If DeFi is offering you 10%, 20% or more, ask one question first: Where is the yield coming from?
The answer tells you far more about the risk than the APY does.

Self-custody removes the custodian.
It does not remove the supply chain.
Ledger, Keystone, Trezor and SafePal expose a harder question:
Who pays when that chain fails?
