From Tanzania to Morocco — another Blackthorn adventure completed!
Blesma Members Lamin Manneh, Colum McGeown and Spencer Bull took on the Blackthorn Rally in Morocco, covering around 230km a day for six days in Can-Am buggies with hand controls.
A huge well done to them!
Blesma Member Alec Waters is taking on all 214 Wainwright peaks across the Lake District, combining his love of the fells with photography.
Alec, who lost both legs in an IED blast in Afghanistan, has completed 53 peaks so far.
“It brings me a sense of fulfilment… It makes me feel alive when I’m there.”
We’ll be cheering him on as he continues the challenge.
Meet Vinod, a Gurkha veteran of 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles.
In Afghanistan in 2010, an explosion took both his legs. Lying wounded, he thought of his pregnant wife: “I worried how she would be if I died.”
Now a proud Blesma Member, he says: “Blesma has helped me a lot. It’s good to meet and talk to other Members. I feel lucky — I lost so many friends I served with.”
Larry and his family was bombed out in the Blitz. He was then called up and sent to Burma.
A grenade landed between him and his mate. It took Larry’s leg. His mate did not come home.
Larry Morgan lived to 102. One of Blesma’s longest-standing Members.“I still think of the lads from Burma. I’m the only one left.”
Rest in peace, Larry. We must never, ever forget.
Rest in peace, Ken.
Landed in Normandy at 17. Died at 101.
We must never, ever forget.
D-Day veteran dies at the age of 101
Veteran Ken Hay, who was just 17 years old when he landed on Juno Beach five days after the initial D-Day landings, was a POW and spent years educating children about the WII, has died aged 101
Huge congratulations to Blesma Member Hari Budha Magar, who won the Invictus Resilience Award at last night’s Invictus Spirit Awards!
From rebuilding his life after losing both legs above the knee to reaching the summit of Mount Everest, Hari has challenged perceptions of disability and encouraged others to pursue their own ambitions.
Behind those achievements are years of hard work and a community of family, friends and supporters standing alongside him.
We’re delighted to see you recognised, Hari. Please join us in congratulating him!
Earlier this year, Blesma Member Andy Reid MBE became the first triple amputee to complete the London Marathon, finishing in 12 hours 34 minutes.
Starting with a four-mile walk on New Year’s Day, Andy built up to 26.2 miles — and raised £82,000 for charity along the way. 👏
Grenadier Guardsman Scott Blaney lost his right leg to an IED in Afghanistan at 20. Then he became the first disabled serviceman ever to stand guard at the Tower of London.
“I felt like one of the blokes again.”
Since then he’s run the London Marathon, swum the Channel, rowed the Atlantic and won silver at the jiu-jitsu Para Worlds.
Golf saved his life. He found it through Battle Back at Headley Court.
Now he’s the first disabled veteran to pass the PGA Programme — and coaches at The Belfry.
“Losing my leg was probably the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Send Scott your congratulations.
“I swam for GB as a teenager but never thought I’d get the kit on again after my amputation.”
Now Blesma Member Rich is representing Great Britain in para archery, with his sights set on the 2032 Paralympic Games.
Blesma has supported him along the way, including with new archery equipment.
