The deeper I dig into this pitch from Seattle U pitcher @BlakeSmith3434, the more absurd it gets. He uses a knuckleball grip to get consistent depth without sacrificing much velocity... but it's not quite a knuckleball. Here's what I found on the pitch he calls the "Splurge" 🧵
Brett Cook@brettccook29 Aug 2025
Quite possibly the most unique pitch I've seen. Knuckleball grip with downward action. At times, up to -20 inches of vertical break from Seattle U pitcher Blake Smith.

Last day hitting in the barn that grew me so much as a hitter and a person. It is hard to say goodbyes but I am grateful for the time/sweat/tears etc… spent in there. Coach John is not a coach to me but family! @behrens_john

Unique update before I hop on the plane, Blake Smith (blake.smith.34 [Instagram]) of @SeattleUBase has just withdrawn from the portal. He was just outside of the top 100 at 102. Big time retention for Seattle. I'll have the full portal update soon, but wanted to get this out.
