Bitwise just launched the first US spot NEAR ETF and it pulled in $35M on day one. Why NEAR? Matt Hougan says it checks every box: real current business, a long-term moonshot as the blockchain for AI, a dedicated community, and proven staying power through a full bull and bear cycle. "If you're interested in the intersection of AI and crypto, there are only a handful of projects showing real traction. NEAR is the top of that stack." Bitcoin fell 50%. Institutions didn't flinch. Bitwise Head of Research Ryan Rasmussen: "None of these institutions were selling their crypto positions, and many of them were adding to their crypto positions." And one sovereign wealth fund "was actually selling their gold and FX reserves to fund their Bitcoin allocation."

🔥 TODAY: Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan says that whether the economy faces rate hikes, inflation, recession or an AI boom, nearly every macro scenario ends with Bitcoin higher. “All roads still lead to Bitcoin.”

Study André’s tweets
Bitcoin ETPs have continued to attract more capital than gold ETPs this year. But there is still significant potential from a rotation from global semiconductor ETFs to Bitcoin ETPs if the AI trade continues to consolidate (probably around ~$40B). BTC vs Gold: BTC vs Semis:

From ETF.com to onchain markets. @Matt_Hougan, CIO of @Bitwise, has spent his career helping investors reach new asset classes. In August, Bitwise’s Solana staking ETF became the first Solana ETF to pass $1B in assets under management.

Institutions bought the bear market dip
Bitwise spoke to 15 of the world's largest institutions during a 50% crypto drawdown. Pensions, sovereign wealth funds, endowments. None of them were selling. Many were buying more. "Their long term thesis for these crypto assets hasn't changed just because the price has come down." One sovereign wealth fund is literally selling gold and FX reserves to fund their Bitcoin allocation. The institutional rotation is already happening. FT @RasterlyRock @Matt_Hougan @BitcoinJesusETH @Nexo.

In 2004, when gold ETFs launched, the entire gold market was ~$2.5 trillion. In 2024, when bitcoin ETFs launched, the entire bitcoin market was roughly ~$2 trillion.
JUST IN: Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan says, "I think Bitcoin could easily do what gold did, which is run up to 30 trillion." 🚀 "The biggest risk in Bitcoin is nothing to do with the protocol or quantum or anything. It's everything to do with the investors and whether they stick it out through those bull and bear markets." "I think there's still significant upside in this asset, like really material life changing upside... And I think it'll play out over a decade."

Three of the world's largest institutions, each managing trillions — Morgan Stanley, Fidelity, BlackRock All on a panel at Token2049, moderated by ICE. Institutions are on team crypto now. Continues to make me bullish for the future.
Thank you @token2049 for having @HHorsley on stage yesterday alongside leaders from some of the largest financial institutions. Incredible to see the industry’s bullishness on tokenization.

Matt Hougan says Bitcoin has become so mainstream that BlackRock discussing AI agents saving in $BTC no longer surprises anyone "I spent much of the last month going to conferences, large wealth conferences, wirehouse conferences. And I will say the attitude has really shifted. Bitcoin has become really mainstream, right? You're no longer looked at in any way like the guy with horns on your head." "You have Morgan Stanley launching ETFs, you have Wells Fargo putting Bitcoin into models. I suspect that that 2024 number will be eclipsed during this cycle pretty significantly in terms of inflows. I've never felt sort of the normalized feeling of Bitcoin as I have over the last month at these wealth platforms." "It's really remarkable. BlackRock put out a note about AI agents using Bitcoin as a store of value, and no one blinked, right? I mean, that would have been like a fantasy dream. Think of that in 2022. Think of that in 2018. Completely absurd." "You'd get excited if they muttered the word Bitcoin, even if it was followed by something like, is it worthless? Technological experiment? You'd be like, at least they said it. Now they're talking about AI agents saving in Bitcoin. It's really crazy."
