Marc Andreessen shared on Rogan the story of Roman fish ponds. Toward the end of the Roman Empire when the wheels were coming off, Cicero wrote letters to aristocratic friends pleading for them to return to public service. Where were they? Isolated personal estates tending to their fashion and perfecting their ‘fish ponds’ — surely tangible ponds back then but a metaphor for disassociating from society and civil discourse by the crucial talent of the day.
