A Bitcoin private key is a 256-bit number. The public key is that number multiplied by a fixed point on the secp256k1 curve.
Computing the public key from the private key takes microseconds. Recovering the private key from the public key has no shortcut, brute force needs to try roughly 2^128 possibilities.
