Waker-Uz-Zaman, the Army Chief of #Bangladesh, had presented a proposal to former Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal– the formation of a new interim government. In fact, he even rushed to the president to ask him to declare a state of emergency in the nation. He left no stone unturned, knocking on the door of Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, and orchestrating a demonstration for the reinstatement of a fresh interim government. However, in every instance, the Army Chief was turned down.
He then took his request to #ProfessorYunus, demanding he prosecute the generals involved in enforced disappearances and murders. But, the Chief Advisor firmly refused, stating that trials for serious crimes like these cannot be carried out anywhere besides the International Crimes Tribunal. After all, enforced disappearances are not illegal under military law.
Indeed, Waker-Uz-Zaman went about carrying out this plan with great enthusiasm – believing he would receive backing from the West. However, it was not long before it struck him that his assumption had been wrong.
The army is not one with rogue generals. We recognize the military representatives as young officers and soldiers who fearlessly supported our people, particularly during the July Revolution.
As for those who conspire to bring Hasina back into power, protect India’s interests or evade responsibility for enforced disappearances and murders – their place surely is in the trashcan of history. The future of Bangladesh belongs not to them; it lies in the hands of the youths, the upright citizens of the nation and the fiercely independent people.

The three most important people in my life are my mother, wife and daughter — three remarkable women. I have always wanted every opportunity, success and happiness for them. I am sure many of you reading this can relate to the same feeling.
Young girls and women across Bangladesh deserve to feel empowered and supported by those around them. Every woman must enjoy the same dignity, security, and opportunity as any man.
On this International Women’s Day, I reaffirm that, just like the previous BNP governments led by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia, we should all work tirelessly to create a just, tolerant, and respectful society that doesn’t discriminate based on gender, race, or religion. Our daughters should have equal opportunities as our sons, and they should step outside their homes or use the internet without harassment, and take up space to use their voices without fear.
BNP’s policy formulation is deeply rooted in recognising the untapped potential of women in a safe and secure society, with initiatives like our “family card” programme, SME loans for women entrepreneurs, academic and vocational schemes to educate young girls. Together, let’s continue to champion women’s economic empowerment, political participation, and personal aspirations.

The interim government, emerging from the sacrifice of thousands and the will of millions, cannot be allowed to fail. Its failure would be a collective failure for the pro-democracy people of Bangladesh.
We must remain vigilant against conspiracies from various factions and come together to ensure it succeeds in establishing democratic reform.
The political empowerment of the people will be achieved only by establishing an elected parliament and a government with public mandate and accountability. This should be the primary target of all reform initiatives.
Through free, fair, and credible elections – safeguarding the right of every voter to cast their vote and choose their desired representative – can this empowerment be achieved. This, in turn, will ensure sustainability in democracy, development, and reform.
Towards that goal, priority must be given to reforming the Election Commission, public administration, and law enforcement agencies. These key constitutional institutions must be made neutral, competent, and credible. The interim government should set its agenda based on these priorities, aligning with the aspirations of the pro-democracy people of Bangladesh and upholding the values of the mass uprising.
