AN UPDATE FROM CBHD'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friend, Thank you for being part of The Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity! I hope you’ve received a copy of LeTourneau’s NOW magazine featuring CBHD. If you would like a copy, please reach out to us. I’m grateful that the university is promoting the Center to a larger constituency—NOW reaches tens of thousands of alumni, donors, faculty, and friends of the university. Everyone at the Center hopes this helps expand our audience and allows us to grow our work in Christian bioethics (more on that below). This year’s summer conference, Polytechnic Bioethics, was a rousing success. We had a terrific group of highly engaged attendees; a slate of compelling plenary addresses, workshops, and paper presentations; and a wonderful time of fellowship. We’ve established a planning committee for next year’s summer conference on the theme of AI and Bioethics. Watch for more information about our 2027 conference and pray for the efforts of our planning committee as we put together a conference that will help us think through the ethics of AI. Perhaps the most prominent area of growth for CBHD is in the launch of the new MA Bioethics Program here at LeTourneau. We submitted the accreditation application at the end of June, and we can now advertise the program as “pending accreditation.” The degree will be 30 hours and can be completed remotely or in person. Courses are slated to begin in January. Please encourage anyone you know who may be interested to contact us for more information. One change from our time at Trinity is that the budget for the bioethics degree program is now part of the Center’s budget. This means that as we move toward the start of the degree program, we are carrying some significant additional costs, and so I need your help. Eventually, once the program is up and running, a portion of the tuition dollars will flow to CBHD to cover these costs. But for now, we need an additional $200,000 before the end of the calendar year to cover faculty salaries and other degree program startup expenses. This is a great opportunity. We’d love for you to be a part of it. Please pray about how you could help us meet this need. We’ve just opened applications for our first Orr Fellow here at LeTourneau. We are seeking an Honors College student entering their junior year who will work with us 5–10 hours a week for the last two years of their undergraduate degree program. Please pray for this process and especially for the person the Lord is even now directing to serve at the Center. In my previous letter, I mentioned LeTourneau’s Faith, Science, and Technology Initiative (FSTI). Another area of growth for CBHD is that we are starting a new podcast with FSTI director Dr. Jonathan Lett. The work of CBHD and FSTI intersect in meaningful ways, and this podcast will help further our joint mission with LeTourneau. Be sure to watch for new episodes in our Weekly email. I’d like to conclude with two recent bioethics issues in the press. In June, the New England Journal of Medicine ran an article arguing for death by organ donation for those seeking assisted suicide or euthanasia, and in the past year, several articles in the news have reported on a new category of fertility clinic that promotes blatantly eugenic selection of embryos. I begin by contemplating how our ways of seeing may be formed and deformed as AI accelerates our daily living. Kaldjian, MD, PhD, "The Challenging & Joyful Task of Christian Integrity in Healthcare." youtube.com/live/zJMnEgs2BrI… Christians are called to live with integrity. Christian healthcare professionals are called to demonstrate integrity by caring for patients in ethical ways that are loving and wise. Such care relies on faith and reason that understands the value of life, the boundaries of health, the legitimate roles of technology, and the meaning of illness, suffering, and death. This understanding carries countercultural implications in healthcare that create ethical disagreements over controversial medical practices. As a result, Christian healthcare professionals must be ready to communicate and act on ethical convictions as they provide compassionate, respectful care for those in medical need. When faced with pressures to cooperate with morally controversial practices, Christian integrity requires conscientious practice that is perceptive and deliberate in avoiding complicity in actions that are contrary to health and Christian ethics. Conscientious practice may be met by opposition and accompanied by moral distress. The task of Christian integrity in healthcare is therefore challenging. It requires love, prayer, wisdom, courage, and endurance. But this task is also joyful, because in loving God and our neighbors by what we do and by what we resist, we experience a clear conscience that delights in God’s will and draws strength from his goodness and mercy. This joy is a sign of the blessing of participating in God’s gracious intentions for this world, even when circumstances are awkward, antagonistic, or hostile. Christian integrity in healthcare therefore brings flourishing. For patients, it communicates life, health, comfort, and hope. For Christian health professionals, it brings the peace of an undivided heart that walks by God’s Word, depends on God’s faithfulness, and trusts in God’s power to comfort, guide, and provide in every moment of our need.
