Resharing a witch tree for Halloween.
Rainy day visit to a 'Witch Tree'. Meet Old Knobbley. According to local lore, women would hide from self-appointed 'Witchfinder General' Matthew Hopkins in spaces within the trunk of this huge ancient Oak. Mistley, Essex.

This is the nicest thing I saw today. “Priamus polycletes” [sic] in Carl Clerck’s Icones insectorum rariorum (1759). This copy at the @LinneanSociety is from the private library of Carl Linnaeus, and annotated by him.

My talk about Elizabeth Blackwell and her “Curious Herbal” is now on the @LinneanSociety’s YouTube channel. It’s an imperfect presentation in lots of ways—and I make a few embarrassing mistakes—but I hope it’s a useful introduction to an amazing book 😊 youtu.be/SurhOJ_x71U?si=4GTh…

Very excited to announce the launch of THE WATERSHED POLLUTION MAP! River health, landfills, sewage, road run-off, intensive farming, big industry, forever chemicals, abandoned mines, bathing waters, flood risk, protected areas and so much more... 🧵 bit.ly/45GBMRQ

I found another AI-generated garbage diagram in a scientific journal. It’s entirely gibberish and features anatomically incorrect limbs with too many bones. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/article…

Apparently, there are many weird and wonderful Polling Stations across Britian, from pubs to Launderettes… Well you can add to that list a museum with a giant sea monster, because today our museum has become a Polling Station. I wonder who our Sea Rex would vote for? #vote

I have a difficult relationship with birds (more Hitchcock than Springwatch), but I really, really love this book at the @LinneanSociety: Louis Agassiz Fuertes ‘Birds of Abyssinia’. Fuertes died in a train crash in 1927, and these illustrations were salvaged from the wreckage.

This beautiful dictionary of colours found in nature dates back more than a century before @pantone. 🎨 Werner's Nomenclature of Colour was an indispensable resource for Charles Darwin, helping him describe new species. What do you think? Which colour is your favourite?
