Our paper is out in Nature, congrats to Qiyu, An et al!
By stimulating ~20 motor cortex neurons carefully selected based on their activity, we could induce learned population activity and, sometimes, the movement itself, depending on the brain's state.

1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria.
2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae.
3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish.
The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists follow their curiosity. This is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!

We learn many things in parallel, and brain circuits are constantly rewiring across brain areas. It is notoriously difficult to understand which rewiring events are responsible for which type of learning.

We identified a subgroup of cholinergic neurons that mediate sensory modality-specific attention. They change their funcitonal properties within secs of behavioral context change.
Congrats to Bin and the team!

What is the synaptic plasticity rule in the brain, we asked. It turns out there are multiple, even within individual neurons.
