A good starting point.
Everyone should read this policy position on homelessness. It doesn't matter if you're a democrat or republican. This policy from @SteveHiltonx is sound. Homelessness should be a non-partisan issue. We have a drug and mental illness crisis compounded by a housing shortage.
If you don't have time to read all the AI Doom essays (how could you not?!), read this instead.

A week later, I'm still thinking about NHJ's article on NYC schools. It was courageous but a huge missed opportunity to call for real reform.
She blames school choice, inequality, segregation, the wealthy and herself. But she seems reluctant to criticize the actors and policies implicated by the failures she documents, perhaps because those conclusions would be uncomfortable for many of her ideological allies.
- She describes absentee teachers, poor instruction, unresponsive administrators, and students who graduate without mastering the material. But she never calls for greater accountability at the district, school, principal, and teacher levels.
- She documents teachers failing to fulfill basic responsibilities but doesn't explore whether tenure and other employment protections allow chronic teacher absenteeism and poor performance to persist.
- She laments the concentration of disadvantaged students but doesn't consider whether NYCPS should consolidate under-enrolled schools, thus allowing more resources towards instruction and increasing socioeconomic diversity.
- She describes her daughter earning As in honors classes despite substantial gaps in her knowledge. Yet she doesn't consider the value of standardized testing as a check on grade inflation and identifying learning gaps before they compound.
- She describes how experienced teachers choose to work in better schools but doesn't salute the districts that have had “reform superintendents” like DC, Dallas, Denver, and Houston that have used cash bonuses to incentivize the best teachers to work in the most disadvantaged schools.
- She notes that eliminating homework harmed her daughter, but doesn't examine how the movement against homework is largely driven by equity advocates who argue that it can turn unequal home circumstances into unequal academic outcomes.
- She condemns school choice yet uses it to secure a better school fit for her daughter, without noting it’s the only realistic escape valve for families who can’t move or afford private school.
- She describes the “impossible balancing act” of teaching students at vastly different levels but doesn't explore how academic tracking can help students at both ends of the academic spectrum.
- She describes disruptive students who harm the classroom environment but doesn’t ask for stronger disciplinary actions to protect other students.
- She documents a school that lowered academic expectations in pursuit of equity but doesn't acknowledge how doing so perpetuates the very achievement gaps those policies seek to eliminate.
Hannah-Jones’ story was powerful. She supplied the evidence for a broad examination of why schools are failing disadvantaged students. It could have been the strongest call in a generation for urban school district reform.
Segregation and poverty are real obstacles. But they cannot become explanations that absolve everyone else of responsibility. We can’t wait to solve all societal issues before demanding higher performing schools.

There are 3 categories of people on here who criticize California/Bay Area policy from a center-right perspective:
1. People who just want to dunk on California.
2. People who want change and believe that posting on X is the way to do it.
3. People who want change and realize that posting here is just a small part of what needs to be done.
People from our group like @ThunderParley, @mockingjays_us and me get quoted in the mainstream media (which most voters still consume) because we set up a political committee, built a website, printed yard signs, filed ballot arguments, and sent press releases. We're category 3.
If you're in category #2 above, please consider joining us in category #3.
Nice to see the @sfchronicle include a comment from the transit tax opposition in their coverage today.

This is fitting. Dolly Parton is American royalty.
She easily could've been a billionaire, but she just kept giving away her money. She gave over $600M to charity, without any fanfare. When Gatlinburg got decimated by wildfires, she didn't give to an NPO...she paid $1,000 a month directly to families who lost their homes, totaling over $12M in direct cash aid to the victims. She also paid 100% of the tuition & books for the kids of any of her 11K employees. Dolly was the ultimate icon of American greatness: be great so you can do great.
She simultaneously built a formidable business empire, and fostered a universally-beloved reputation that spans every clique in America. I've literally never heard a single disparaging word about Dolly from anyone. I know everyone will try to "claim" her for their pet political issue, or whatever...but she transcended politics and petty partisanship her entire life, and we should honor that now that God has called her home. She was just a genuine blessing to our country, and perhaps the best example of what an American should aspire to be. Faithful. Great. Prolific. Kind. Generous. Humble.

Market doesn't give notice before it revolts against the debt. But so far this month, as debt crossed $40 trillion, the 30-year bond yield hit a 19-year high, gold rose 13%, silver +18%, GSCI commodity index +5%, BTC +19% and the dollar weakened. Markets are saying something.

Dirty smear politics is alive and well in SF, and it's high time we made sure the playbook backfires from here
A few dishonest groups invent a smear and the local legacy media rubber stamps it out of abdication of duty to the people
We demand consequences for the lies now
Manny and Shahid. Both were accused during political campaigns by common members of three groups: The Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club, the SFBerniecrats, and the San Francisco Democratic Socialists. Dean Preston and Jackie Fielder participated in Buttar’s smear despite Buttar being a fellow Democratic Socialist and rising star on the national political stage.
Fielder and Preston along with the rest of DSASF signed a document rescinding their support of Pelosi rival @ShahidForChange despite admitting the sexual assault claims had been “debunked.” This was a smear job, and so is what they’re doing to Manny. Part 1 — the case for Manny ⬇️

"What if we don’t actually have a competitive two-party system? What if our nation actually has two one-party systems, instead? It’s time to close the loophole that allows city-funded nonprofits to lobby in secret. San Francisco doubled its investment in nonprofits for needed public services since 2019 — yet some of that investment appears to fund lobbying and advocacy campaigns to push for still MORE city funding.
Shouldn’t ALL lobbying and advocacy spending be disclosed? In my view, doing so will…
