Pill's message was that "disinflation" remains intact in the UK, despite a "hump" in inflation this year. "I would expect we're going to cut Bank Rate further. But the pace at which you can do it is less," he said. Full story from @BillReuters and me: reuters.com/markets/rates-bo…

“The Bank publishes a forecast which many MPC members - often the bulk of MPC members - don't think is a realistic description,” former Bank of England rate setter Michael Saunders told me. Now Nobel Prize winner Ben Bernanke is trying to improve things.

After today's UK inflation surprise, a quick look at what 2024 may bring. In brief: falling energy prices, slowing food inflation + the intricacies of the Ofgem price cap mean many economists think CPI will be 2% or lower by April. The BoE's (November) forecast? 2% in late 2025

Today's GDP data show 🇬🇧 is still the weakest performer in the G7 since late 2019, the last full quarter before the Covid pandemic. But it's worth noting that 🇩🇪 isn't doing much better. 🇺🇸 is ahead of the pack by some margin.

Britain has more older people who have stopped working since the pandemic than almost anywhere else. Despite high inflation (and the odd government call to get off the golf course!) few so far have returned to the office or shop floor. reuters.com/world/uk/britain…

RIP Wayne Shorter, the 1st performer I ever saw in the US, on a New York night so snowy the Blue Note was half empty and I shared a table with a guy called Cliff who couldn’t believe I’d never heard Native Dancer and bought me the cassette. Thanks, Cliff open.spotify.com/playlist/06…
