This Kharif, timely updates on farmer-friendly rains are reaching 9.6 lakh farmers in Odisha through Krushi Samrudhi voice calls. Powered by AI-based forecasts, the service helps farmers plan better. @KVSinghDeo1 @arvindpadhee
I'm migrating over to Bluesky, since this site will soon be owned by and feeding all its information directly to the head of a new federal agency. Regardless of my feelings for billionaire social media CEOs, at least they hadn't been able to arrest me. #DeepState #BigBrotherMusk

Like many university faculty, I write a lot of reference letters. Here's instructions I give to students. Students: many of these practices will make your letters better, improve your relationship with your mentors, and convey more professional behavior.

It's been a quiet season in South Asia for monsoon low pressure systems, which produce the majority of extreme rainfall there, but ensemble models are finally beginning to predict some chance of genesis over next ~week (still < 50% chance).

I want to talk about weather and war, but probably not the war you think given the focus of news media and college campus protests. I'm talking about what the @ACLEDINFO called 'the most violent overall' conflict in the world now: the civil war in Myanmar.

UNOCHA estimates 13 million people in Myanmar need emergency food—about the population of Israel, Gaza & West Bank combined. The same number need health support. Yet tiny fractions of these needs are being met: only 10% of the UN's requested $1 billion aid has been received.
6/7
That's only $100 million in aid received—for these national scales that's tiny; San Francisco alone, a city of less than 1 million people, spends 5-10 times that amount each year to address its homelessness crisis.
All of this draws heavily from @reliefweb, @UNOCHA
