The soy sauce packet in your takeout bag isn't soy sauce. The biggest maker, Kari-Out in New Jersey, lists water, salt, hydrolyzed soy and corn protein, caramel color and sodium benzoate. No fermentation, no brewing. It's made in a couple of days by boiling defatted soy meal in hydrochloric acid, neutralizing it, then adding color and corn syrup so it looks and tastes close enough. A lot of the bottles on the grocery shelf are the same thing. Kikkoman and the Japanese government went to the UN food standards body years ago and asked that the chemical version not be allowed to use the name soy sauce. The hydrolyzed protein industry and the USDA pushed back and it stayed. The brewed ones say naturally brewed on the label. If the bottle doesn't say it, it isn't.

The fact that Europeans haven't constructed guillotines in their capital city squares shows an almost superhuman degree of restraint

The intensity of the hyper-partisanship and profound division we currently inhabit becomes most apparent to me whenever I comment on what I regard as the occasional unforced errors of President Donald J. Trump. Any balanced commentator has experienced the bizarre sensation of being aggressively strafed from both sides simultaneously—for insufficient criticism on the one hand, or insufficient loyalty on the other. Yet one must call it as one sees it. As someone who has known Donald Trump personally for three decades, and as a presidential historian whose works on two American presidents stand as the official biographies recommended by their respective presidential libraries, my assessment is that while President Trump, like all of us, is not without flaws, he is a good man, and in my considered judgment he has, on balance, been a good president. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and can agree or disagree. But let me propose this litmus test: if you cannot list at least five of Trump’s major accomplishments or five of his failures, you are almost certainly inhabiting one of the two prevailing echo chambers. And my recommendation as an unlicensed psychologist is to switch off your computer or smart phone, draw a few deep breaths, step outside for a walk if the weather is nice, embrace your children or spouse if you are lucky enough to have them nearby, and remember that life is short.

Other than losing their entire navy, air force, a few strata of political leadership, top military minds, over 1,000 senior IRGC and Basij commanders, air defense and radar sites, numerous scientists, ballistic missile stockpiles and most launchers, drone and missile factories, proxies, etc.. Iran has the upper hand.

Canada is insanely stacked - perhaps the best team ever assembled. If the US manages to somehow beat them it will be the greatest hockey upset against a Communist power since the Miracle on Ice.

The moment was Covid. It happened. Almost every journalist in the nation failed to relay reliable information, instead succumbing to panic and the widest-spread daily curtailment of civil liberties in my lifetime. The rare figures who didn't were silenced or stifled or removed.
Every single word of this fantastic column by @Peggynoonannyc ‘I fear sometimes that few people really care about journalism, but we are dead without it. Someday something bad will happen, something terrible on a national scale, and the thing we’ll need most, literally to survive, is information. Reliable information—a way to get it, and then to get it to the public. That is what journalism is, getting the information. ‘ wsj.com/opinion/a-lament-for…
