On a cold winter morning, Gajraj Singh Kachhawa was drinking hot, sugary tea at a tea stall. He was about to leave when he saw a man buy a packet of biscuits and feed them to a stray dog. Gajraj was concerned. He knew that biscuits were not good for dogs. They were high in sugar and wheat, which could make the dog sick. He approached the man and asked why he was feeding the dog biscuits. The man shrugged. "It's all I can afford," he said. "A packet of biscuits costs only ₹5." Gajraj was determined to do something to help the stray dogs. He started Bejubano Ki Rasoi (Kitchen for the Voiceless), a kitchen that prepares and sells pre-packed, nutritious dog meals. Each meal costs only ₹5, making it affordable for everyone. "We are now selling over 500 packets of food each day," he adds. "Each precooked meal, which weighs 400g, contains paneer, soybean, rice, eggs, and multivitamins for dogs," says Gajraj. When Gajraj started this initiative, he did not want to charge for the food. However, his friends persuaded him to charge a nominal amount. "I was told that no one would appreciate what I was doing if I didn't charge for it. So, after the biscuit incident, I started charging Rs 5." Gajraj plans to open five more counters across Jaipur in order to feed a minimum of 3,000 dogs each day. "We do not accept donations from individuals and instead rely solely on self-funding and the money we make from selling the meal packets." Want to keep your furry friend healthy?
