Utterly delighted to tell you that @ResearchDoula and I have an article in this issue, reporting on our @parentscigang @wellcometrust funded research, where we discovered (inter alia) that BMI 30+ women avoid wanted care in 2nd+ pregnancies as a result of prior poor experience 1/

Word of the day is ‘recrudescence’ (17th century): the return of something terrible after a time of reprieve.
Excellent paper on the methodological flaws in Gestational Weight Gain (GWG) research, and *especially* when flawed research influences conclusions in meta-analyses. By @JodieMDodd1 et al.

Been saying this for SO LONG!!! So validating!
Some quotes:

And the fudging of the data gets worse still when multiple datasets are combined into larger meta analyses.
Not to mention the extreme heterogeneity of GWG studies being pooled!
So refreshing to hear the researchers call this stuff out!

"Continuing to weigh women... for a “benefit” of a 1 kg difference in weight... despite no demonstrable improvement in maternal and infant health, stigmatizes women... and takes no account of the potential harms of such behaviours."
Thank you @JodieMDodd1 et al
A-bloody-men.

For anyone staying @HiltonHotels Birmingham Metropole for #MatSafety2024 @babylifeline
Check your card statements!
Have just discovered they took £18 for 'breakfast' (which was inc the room rate!) - despite sending me a £0.00 invoice for my stay on check out...
V dodgy.
1/
Yes, I've just had to spend 27 minutes on the phone to 4 different people @HiltonHotels to get this refunded, all of whom unconcerned their system is able to send a £0.00 invoice while actually charging me £18.
And trying to claim it's a spam filter issue my end... Nice try.

Can you help PhD student Ruya plan her Gestational Diabetes Research? Are you in the UK? Have you experienced GD in a previous pregnancy?

Today we launch a new Priority Setting Partnership to gather unanswered research questions related to LGBTQIA+ perinatal care. If you have questions about becoming & being pregnant, birth, feeding & the year after birth for LGBTQIA+ people, tell us here: bit.ly/3Bev2zp
Talking today about fat bias and blinkered BMI thinking in research leading to poor conclusions.
Particularly when confounding variables more likely in higher BMI populations aren't accounted for... then the perfect example dropped into my inbox!

I had a great day at #MatSafety2024 yesterday, and got to swim in the hotel pool twice while I was there, which was a delightful treat!
But I should have made this point yesterday re risk communication and didn't... My section was so brief! 😭
An excellent way to present risk is this:
The rates of X if you do Y.
The rates of X if you don't do Y.
And crucially, that the DIFFERENCE in risk of X of doing Y is xx.
Given potential other downsides to Y to consider, it's really helpful for informed decision making.

Listening to Clo of @fivexmore on the need for UK target to reduce inequalities in maternity care outcomes & provision for black women & their babies.Needs to be timely. Must happen but how? Also focus on how we embed women’s voices in all we do @babylifeline
This is a brilliant idea to bring maternity information to South Asian communities using an easily accessible co-created app available in 6 languages!
#JanamApp
Listening to Prof Angie Doshani on the development of the Janam app. As seen in @OckReview work over many yrs language barriers significantly contribute to health inequalities & safety concerns The app: available in 6 languages, with public health messaging. Brilliant!
