Morocco - point of no return For three weeks, Morocco had absorbed it. Wave after wave of social media attacks, amplified and coordinated, paired with a political pressure campaign out of Spain's internal bickering. A fake UK news agency leaked a story claiming FIFA had secretly promised Morocco the final — a lie built to detonate outrage. When that didn't land hard enough, the attacks turned personal: threats to the head of FIFA himself, an attempt to force him out. Three weeks of noise, engineered to provoke a reaction Morocco refused to give. Then, on Moroccan state television, an official spokesman delivered the elite's answer. Every party, every official, was instructed to stand down. The message was to be sent — but sent clean. No ridicule of Spain. No mockery of its people. No framing of Spain as a burden on its European allies. Stay on script. Stay out of Europe's internal fights. What came next was not improvised. It was chess play. Under the Moroccan constitution, matters of state — military affairs, foreign relations, strategic development — sit with the King alone. When Morocco speaks on foreign affairs, it is normally the foreign ministry that speaks. This time, the task went to the Minister of Justice. That choice was the first move. It told anyone paying attention that Morocco wasn't playing the expected game. **The first punch** came as a single sentence: *Morocco stands firm and committed, immediately ready to receive all Moroccans who crossed the border. The question of the enclaves' sovereignty will be resolved through dialogue, in due time.* Madrid heard it. Sánchez heard it. The government heard it. The King of spain. heard it. Morocco waited a week — giving Spain room to de-escalate, room to send a clear signal back. Instead, Spain's political class, unable to match the opposition's media reach and hoping public sympathy might swing toward them, let the digital onslaught continue. Their statements stayed muted, but they kept riding the same narrative that was burning them. It would turn out to be the costliest miscalculation they could have made. Along the Strait, patience ran out. Morocco opened the historical archives — every enclave, every island, from the Canaries to Ceuta and Melilla — and prepared to force the issue permanently. **The second punch** landed a week later, and it changed everything: *Morocco expects the return of all its enclaves. It's time for Spain to face the music. Those who crossed the border told the Minister of Justice they were standing inside Morocco, not Spain — and so Moroccan authorities have no right to stop them.* With that one sentence, Spain's options collapsed to two: remain a European country, fully inside the Union — or step outside Europe altogether, redefined as part of Africa, part of Morocco's sphere. There was no comfortable middle. Madrid was trapped, and its government, already thin on authority, grew visibly weaker by the day. Barcelona watched and waited. In the weakness of the central government, Catalans could smell opportunity — but held back, reading the moment rather than seizing it. Meanwhile the fractures continues to spread: the north eyed independence or union with France, Andalusia's resentment of Madrid deepened, and Spain drifted toward a kind of quiet disintegration — disenfranchised, distracted, and politically exhausted. For Morocco, this was never really about weakening Spain. A fractured, disempowered Spain is not what Rabat wants sitting across the Strait. A strong Spain, stable and intact, matters to Morocco as a question of survival — as a nation, and as a culture. But strength has to be earned back, not assumed. And Morocco is already looking past the crisis. With national elections set for October, the key figures for the next government had been chosen, and a new item had been written permanently into the political agenda: *The return of the territories to the homeland.* @MarocDiplomatie @SpainMFA
