Two of Serie A's most interesting teams = the first goalless draw in the league. I discuss: - Both teams lateral, to play vertical. - Como wants the +1. - Roma triple-width, Dybala only access to runners. - Poor 2nd half from Como v 10. (BtP subscribers) betweentheposts.net/como-as-…

Interesting result in the Bundesliga this weekend as Augsburg held Bayern Munich to a 2-2 draw. There were a few interesting tactical points which I've analysed in the piece for @BetweenThePosts (available for subscribers). One of those aspects, as covered in the images below, was Augsburg's intent to create separation after baiting Bayern's man-man press. By utilising deep runs, they tried to create advantages by capitalising on potential lapse of defensive concentration from the opposition forwards. For Augsburg's second goal, Olise and Davies were both susceptible to this. For those who want to and can access the 1.8k+ word report, I've attached the link below.

RC Lens–Lyon analysis now up on @BetweenThePosts. I look at how Lens exploited Lyon’s hesitation to press, the connection between Thauvin, Aguilar and Cuisance/Sotoka down the right, and OL’s struggles to find the free man and break through Lens’ defensive block. betweentheposts.net/rc-lens-…

(FREE) France - Italy analysis now up, I discuss: - French counterpress, why they can leave -1s laterally. - Jacquet defending in front. - Few spaces vs improved Italy block. - Leading Bastoni out to attack blindside… only that it comes back to bite. betweentheposts.net/france-i…

Latest match analysis is on Italy's 0-2 defeat to Belgium, I discuss: - De Bruyne peels wide of Cambiaghi's jump. - Italy caught in the merging phase (not quite block, nor press). - Issues in rest defence = KdB through ball, Godts on transition. betweentheposts.net/italy-be…

(Thread) A quick diagnosis of Como conceding 22 shots vs Frosinone. This was a game in which they could have easily won, but Cesc's team gave away nearly 2xG in the first half, after Frosinone exploited the space behind narrow FBs + emphasis on attacking the right side.

Roma - Inter analysis is now live (& FREE for all), I discuss: - Why does this game always draw so many third-man runs? - A match defined by the second ball. - The Roman/Dybala diagonal. - Inter exploits the Koné jump (again). - Gasperini still cursed. betweentheposts.net/roma-int…

Very impressive game from Sassuolo, one where they showed some effective methods to disrupt Juve OOP: - Thorstvedt inside creates tension. - Esposito dropping to connect the third man. - Switch to Laurienté on transition. Full tactical analysis here: betweentheposts.net/sassuolo…

Analysed a very interesting Bundesliga match between Elversberg and Bayern Munich for @BetweenThePosts. Thought Wagner had simple but well-executed tactical ideas. Below is just one of those details within the full report that I published, which is available for subscribers. During possession phases, Elversberg focused on baiting the Bayern press by keeping the ball in the defensive third before accessing the 4v4 in the frontline. It even directly contributed for their equalising goal. An interesting detail here is the goalkeeper's involvement - Kristof recorded over 60 on-ball touches. Overall, I thought Elversberg performed very well and displayed a lot of courage. They'll put up a good fight to survive in the Bundesliga this season.

Inter's dynamism and rotations during settled possession phases is causing Real Madrid's 4-4-2 press issues centrally and in the wide areas. Structurally, Inter utilise a 3-5-2 but the following points make it fluid. Tactical Context: - Deepest central midfielder (Calhanoglu) often joins the backline while the wide midfielders (Barella and Jones) drift below, beside, and beyond. - Wide centre-backs have the license to run beyond and support the wing-backs, who also aggressively move forward. - Martinez tends to drop below to generate a central overload while Thuram looks to threaten vertically and beyond the Madrid backline. - Positional rotations within these roles with players comfortable switching positions. Tensions: 1. Central overloads are the biggest problem for Madrid, in my opinion. Trent and Valverde can get stretched for Martinez to drop and receive. This will not be tracked by a Madrid centre-back since Thuram occupies Konate and Huijsen. 2. If Trent and Valverde remain central, Jones and Barella can push wide to produce wide overloads. With Inter's wide centre-backs willing to run beyond, there can be 3v2 situations against the Madrid winger and full-back. Overall, I think Inter have an excellent tactical foundation and advantages to beat Madrid's high press/mid-block to progress up the field and enter the final third. They have done decent to translate these situations into shots as well. However, they carelessly let dangerous chances slip by and find themselves 2-0 down. Such poor individual details from Jones and the keeper to leak two unnecessary goals. Still, plenty of time left and there are opportunities for Inter to get back into this.

Christos Tzolis is an incredible addition for Arsenal. He offers more solutions than Martinelli against low blocks (Martinelli was the kryptonite to high lines) & proves that he's replacing Trossard as well. His cuts inside and timing of his passes across the defensive line are elite. When he cuts in, he goes against the opponent's lateral shifting. You see it here against Manchester City and Chelsea. All the defenders and midfielders shuffle across; their vision is oriented toward the ball, and all of them are side-on. There is nothing wrong with these defensive proceedings. But also, their blind sides are vulnerable and can be exploited by players coming from the opposite side. Odegaard scored against Manchester City and Chelsea by timing his late arrival into the blind spots. Of course, Chelsea (Lavia-James) and Manchester City (Anderson-Kovacic) double pivots could've prevented that by quickly retreating and squeezing the space in front of the defensive line
