There's a version of you that is at the mercy of your own mind — carried along by whatever it produces, believing whatever it tells you, acting on whatever it generates, without ever quite stepping back to ask: is this my best thinking? Is this even thinking I have chosen?

Metacognition. The word comes from the Greek meta, meaning beyond or about, and cognition, meaning thinking. So metacognition, at its most literal, is thinking about thinking. #Metacognition #Psychology #PersonalDevelopment #SelfAwareness #CriticalThinking #GrowthMindset

How are you thinking? Not the content of your thoughts — but the process. You spend a lot of time thinking. But when did you last think about how you think? 🧠 That's the question at the heart of the new episode of The Better Humans Project. #Metacognition #Psychology

We give enormous attention to what we think. We give almost none to how we think. And yet the how, the cognitive habits, biases, and assumptions running in the background, shapes every decision we make, every judgement we form, and every story we tell ourselves.

Seligman's learned helplessness research: dogs subjected to unavoidable shocks later failed to escape — even when escape became possible. The same process operates in humans. We stop trying not because we can't — but because we've stopped believing it makes a difference.

Psychologists divided people into groups based on a coin toss. Within minutes: in-group loyalty, out-group suspicion, differential resource allocation. A coin toss. That's the tribal instinct. New episode on tribalism in modern life - see bio #Psychology #TheBetterHumansProject

Socrates and Albert Camus were separated by more than two thousand years yet neither of them equated a worthwhile life with a successful one in any conventional sense. Neither wealth, nor status, nor achievement, nor recognition made the cut as sufficient criteria. #podcast

Deficiency motivation is driven by what we lack: Growth motivation is driven by what we genuinely want to become. Most conventional life yardsticks are deficiency metrics. Even when you achieve them, they provide only temporary relief before the next inadequacy presents itself.

Most of us are running some kind of internal scoreboard. We're measuring ourselves, constantly, against some standard of what a successful, worthwhile life looks like. We might not have named that standard. We might not even be aware we're doing it.
