Washington voters have a chance to do the right thing THIS WEEK by voting YES on I-638 to restore fairness to female sport. Pre-participation "sports physical" exams have been mandatory for K12 athletes in Washington since the 1970's, over fifty years ago. These are normally performed by the family's private pediatrician, who then completes a single-page "medical eligibility form" such as can be seen at WIAA.com/forms Washington initiative 2026-638 would leverage this physical to assure fairness in female sport, by adding a sixth checkbox for athletes who are female and so eligible to participate in female sport. No additional exams or paperwork or burden would be involved for anyone, and it shall be on this November's ballot. If passed, this would make Washington the 28th state to protect female sport in this way, in keeping with recent court findings and the practice of most international sporting bodies, such as the IOC, FINA World Aquatics, World Athletics, World Boxing, World Rugby and others. Many of the parents at this meet had not even heard of I-638, so I urge everyone to share this on social media, have people read their Voters' Pamphlets and vote YES on I-638.
