Today on Substack I am recalling the films that first raised my fascination with historical story telling. thepastinthepresent.substack…

My debut novel is out tomorrow and it's currently feeling like a non-thing. The author in me is incredibly disappointed, the introvert in me is slightly relieved.
Anyway, here's my book. Insert confetti.

Do we know what the rules are? What’s the scoring criteria? I didn’t even know this was a thing.

Very interesting and admirable. Ron Jeffreys' book Red Runs the Vistula about his experiences in the Home Army, is a riveting read, by the way.
Przyjechałem do Polski z Wielkiej Brytanii 16 lat temu.
Z czasem poznałem moją cudowną żonę i założyliśmy naszą piękną rodzinę razem.
Przyszłość należy do Polski. 🇵🇱

LADY OF THE CASTLE HAS JUST PUBLISHED!
“Lady of the Castle is a superb sequel that builds upon everything I loved about the first novel... Rich in historical detail, full of emotion, and impossible to put down, this is historical fiction at its very best.”

Amazing picture. When working at the university of Hertfordshire I had a view of these fields from my window because our De Havilland campus stands on the site of the aeroplane factory

One of the great misconceptions about medieval churches is that they were austere worlds of bare stone;
they were anything but.
These extraordinary columns in the church of Sainte-Radegonde in Poitiers date largely from c.1250–1300 and preserve exceptionally rare traces of the colour that once saturated the medieval sacred world. Their heraldic decoration appears to represent local lords and benefactors whose earthly identities were quite literally incorporated into the fabric of the church and that is profoundly Catholic!
The medieval church building was not conceived merely as an auditorium in which worship happened. It was both catechesis in stone and an image of redeemed creation: in an age when books were precious and literacy far from universal, colour, sculpture, stained glass, saints and biblical scenes taught the faith to the eye. The church itself became a kind of visual theology, gathering earth and heaven together and ordering the material world towards the worship of God.
Christianity did not demand the abandonment of material things, because at its heart stands the astonishing claim that the Word became flesh. Beauty, therefore, was not incidental to worship. Matter itself (stone, wood, pigment, glass, gold) could be enlisted in the proclamation of the Gospel. That makes the iconoclastic impulse of the Reformation particularly significant: when images were smashed, statues broken, walls whitewashed and shrines destroyed, something more than medieval decoration disappeared. An older Catholic sacramental imagination, in which the material world could become a sign pointing beyond itself to divine realities, was being displaced by a very different conception of sacred space.
What survives at Sainte-Radegonde gives us a tantalising glimpse of how dazzling the churches of medieval Christendom must once have been!!
Just had a fascinating tour around The King's Head, Aylesbury. This pub dates from the mid-15th century and has a title deed to prove it. #provableantiquity
One of my very favourite films but till now I have never known the identity of that one Israeli pilot.
The ending to the 1969 film Battle of Britain 🇬🇧. It made Hitler cancel Operation Sealion, the invasion of Britain.
The credits at the end list an Israeli 🇮🇱 pilot. It is Flying Officer George Ernest “Randy” or “Benny.” Goodman DFC. He was born in Haifa, his dad British & his mum an Israeli Jew.
He served in No. 1 Squadron in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain, becoming an ace with ten individual victories and six shared. He was to die in action in North Africa in June 1941.
A brave man who deserves to be remembered.
I am one of the few booked for the London. And looking forward to it
