New paper out in @TheLancetPH with @FrancoisSchoen and @AMBachMortensen:
Do commercial markets deliver public services where we need them?
Open access: thelancet.com/journals/lanpu…
A NEW study by @BenGoodair from @CASE_LSE and colleagues published in @TheLancetPH finds "the commercialisation of children’s social care in England has contributed to a sufficiency crisis with profound indirect health consequences.”

We conclude:
Our study "reveals a system either inherently unsuited to commercial interests, or too poorly resourced to effectively regulate private sector behaviour."

#dkpol

New paper, showing inequalities in social care.
"The poorest areas have far fewer outstanding rated care homes, despite those areas having higher care needs."
@DHSCgovuk @SocialcareToday @CASE_LSE @BlavatnikSchool @CommunityCare
England’s two tier system deepens social care inequalities.
@AMBachMortensen and colleagues examine how increasing reliance on out-of-pocket payments for adult social care has created a quality divide

Out today in @bmj_latest
What happens in a two-tier care system where some people pay and others don't?
- Care homes give better care for the richest;
- They open in the richest areas;
- Something people learn when their savings run out..

Our case for change is quite simple: the system doesn't function well for anyone.
A different funding model can simultaneously provide more equitable outcomes whilst preventing extortionate costs for people self-funding.
Many thanks to great co-authors @AMBachMortensen @Michelle_Degli and @DrCNeedham
And many thanks to our funders @NuffieldFound
All feedback welcome :)
