Last week, a team with Benjamin, Maxim and Ben traveled to the TOMCAT-beamline of the SLS synchrotron in Switzerland to predict the freeze-thaw weathering of natural building stones by using X-ray dark-field imaging. @GeologyUGent @ugent_fwe @ugent

Our new paper applied X-ray dark-field tomography to quantify pore sizes that were up to 100 times smaller than the image resolution. This could overcome the current trade-off in X-ray µCT between the field-of-view and the image resolution. @ugent_fwe

Some good news to share with you to finish the week, I was awarded my PhD in Geology, and next week I'll be travelling to Belgium to begin my new role as a postdoc at Ghent University. Thank you to all the amazing people that have supported me along the way! #DrBen #Rockdoctor
For underground CO2 storage assurance, our latest @STEMM_CCS_EU paper presents a new multiscale approach for seismic chimney/pipe characterisation in sedimentary basins #CCUS @UoS_OES @NOCnews @GEOMAR_en @EdinGeoenergy @HWUgeoenergy @UiTromso @Shell

New paper: Latest findings from the GASRIP project for detecting early warning of salt precipitation during geological carbon sequestration #CCUS #XCT @NOCnews @coschoolofmines @UoS_OES Thank you to our project partners @Shell @bp_plc @ikonscience @IEAGHG nature.com/articles/s41598-0…
The aim of the GASRIP project is to provide tools for risk assessment and development strategies for CCS and EOR-CCS projects, through the understanding and control of salt weathering mechanisms in CO2 storage saline aquifers. #energytransition

Quantifying fluid-flow properties of rock using 3D X-ray micro-CT imaging generates beautiful images, but are the results accurate and repeatable? The answer is YES, if you follow a careful image-processing workflow, that we explore in our new paper doi.org/10.1093/gji/ggaa321
3. Technical point: ImageJ's 3D Weka segmentation (a supervised machine learning tool) is a very good segmentation technique; the maximum sample size that can be segmented is no longer constrained by the size of your computer memory, provided that you use a tiling algorithm...
Has this work sparked your curiosity?...also check out an excellent publication in this fast-growing field in 2020, by Dr. Samuel Jackson @sci_sjj , that address multiphase flow from the pore to continuum scale: doi.org/10.1029/2019WR026396
