Vienna was a key stronghold of the Holy Roman Empire. If Vienna were to fall, the overland route to Western Italy, Venice, and Rome would lie wide open, devoid of any significant fortified defenses. Consequently, Pope Innocent XI viewed the Siege of Vienna in 1683 not merely as a regional conflict between Austria and the Ottomans, but as an existential struggle for the survival of the Holy See and the Catholic Church. Pope Innocent XI’s formation of the Holy League (*Sacra Liga*), accomplished by raising funds, conducting intensive diplomacy, and appointing John III Sobieski as supreme commander, was a preventive measure aimed at saving Rome from that ambition.
