The amount of shame and misinformation around the Lindsay Clancy trial makes me fear that women will not seek treatment for PPD or even worse PPP. I want to share my story because I think it is a much more run of the mill experience with no tragedy. I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder in my early 20s after getting out of an extremely traumatic and emotionally abusive relationship. I eventually got into therapy and my doctor put me on a low dose of SSRIs. They helped me so much. When I wanted to get pregnant with my first I tapered off them with the help of my doctor. I felt good during pregnancy without them and while I am not a doctor, I think it is because of elevated hormone levels. My son was born via emergency C-section after a traumatic birth and we went home with the most beautiful crankiest child in history. My husband had to go back to work and my son never stopped screaming. My mother in law was an absolute blessing, but even she who is a baby whisperer could not calm him down. He never ever slept. Breastfeeding was so hard and did not work well. He hated formula. My hormone levels dropped and my depression came roaring back. I did not trust anyone to stay with him but family because he screamed all the time and I thought someone that did not love him would hurt him. My mom kept telling me he had colic and it would stop around 10 weeks. I never thought about hurting him or myself, but I remember vividly picturing myself running out of the house. I could picture myself running at full speed down the stairwell and out and then begging hubby to let me come back after 10 weeks when the colic subsided. It was then that I told my husband where I was and he called my doctor and I got back on my antidepressants and I met regularly with my therapist. The fix for me was simple. My son is 20 now and the light of my life. You do not have to suffer in silence because you are afraid someone thinks you might hurt your baby. The Lindsay Clancy case is the furthest extreme of factors and mental health, but being a new mom is no joke. Take care of yourselves mommas, because you are responsible for the most amazing human in the world, your new baby.
