The Sweet Track, an ancient Neolithic timber walkway located in the Somerset Levels in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧 The Sweet Track was built around 3800 BC, across the marshlands of the Somerset Levels in southwestern England, making it one of the oldest known engineered roadways ever discovered. Constructed from carefully laid oak planks supported by wooden pegs driven into the wet ground, the track provided a reliable route over otherwise impassable wetlands. Remarkably, tree-ring analysis has allowed archaeologists to date some of the timber with extraordinary precision, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of Britain's early farming communities. Far from being primitive settlers, the people who built the Sweet Track demonstrated sophisticated planning, woodworking skills, and a deep understanding of their environment. The structure connected areas of higher ground and likely facilitated travel, trade, and communication across the landscape. Preserved for millennia beneath waterlogged peat, the walkway stands as a testament to Neolithic ingenuity, showing that large-scale infrastructure projects were being undertaken in Britain thousands of years before the construction of Stonehenge or the Egyptian pyramids. #archaeohistories
