I just released a new long-form article I have been working on for a while. This is a 9,000-word, in-depth exploration of a topic that affects everyone, mostly unconsciously.

Did you know both Natalie Portman and Olivia Newton John's families were shaped by the Nazi era and have ties to British intelligence?
Natalie Portman was born Natalie Hershlag in Jerusalem. Her stage name comes from her paternal grandmother, Mania Portman, a Romanian Jew who, according to Natalie, worked as a spy for the British during World War II, using her blonde hair to pass as non-Jewish while traveling through Europe. Her grandfather, Zvi Yehuda Hershlag, left Poland for British Mandatory Palestine in the late 1930s. His parents stayed behind and were murdered at Auschwitz. Her grandparents settled in Mandatory Palestine in the late 1930s and were part of the Jewish community that built the institutions of what became Israel. Her grandfather later became an economics professor there.
Olivia Newton-John's grandfather was Max Born, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and one of the founders of quantum mechanics. Because of his Jewish background, the Nazis forced him out of his professorship at Göttingen in 1933, and he fled to Britain. Her father, Brinley Newton-John, served in MI5 during the war, worked on the Enigma codebreaking effort at Bletchley Park, and is often credited with taking Rudolf Hess into custody in 1941.
One family built a new life in what became Israel; the other found refuge in Britain. Both carry the story of a generation whose lives were upended by the Nazis, and both had a family member working for British intelligence during the war.
