I finally have my copy of @_doublearrow’s “Arrows of desire”, the history of BR’s famous symbol. It is absolutely super and highly recommended, and I was very proud to be asked to contribute an introductory essay.
You can/should buy it via The Modernist: the-modernist.org/products/a…

Simon Rigge, one of our Advisory Panel members, has written about Bricket Wood and our recent Advisory Panel Meeting. In defence of Watford Junction Station I should say that it was where the express train sequences for Brief Encounter were filmed.

Replying to @_doublearrow @watfordgap
As to rarity, I think the BR sign must be rarer than the map (although not as pretty). I know York’s tiled map has a similar disclaimer sign but many of the tiled maps do not. And one (or more?) is on the Tyne and Wear Metro so no BR signage there, of course.

And, since ‘Arrows of desire’ is really all about transport and design, who better to set the scene at the start of the book than Daniel Wright, @BeautyOfTranspt, whose introductory essay is a masterpiece…

Delighted that @LordPeterHendy, Minister of State for Rail, has written the foreword for my new book ‘Arrows of desire’

I have seen the preproduction version of this because, er, Nick asked me to write an introductory essay for the book about the #doublearrow’s cultural impact. Despite that, the book is brilliant and you should definitely order it At Once. Off you go.
‘Arrows of desire’, a book all about the illustrious British Rail symbol, published by the modernist® @modernistmag is now available for pre-order at…

So I wrote a book…
In his new book 'Arrows of desire', Nick Job @_doublearrow takes a long look at
the revered British Rail symbol. It is making something of a comeback although, in truth, it never really went away.
You can pre-order your copy now.

#TfLArchitecture Loughton is a very complete Moderne station, on a line where most structures are of 19 (c) GER origin. Built by LNER in 1940, for LT, Architect John Murray Easton. Canopies & concrete name boards / lamps great examples of period. Justifiably Listed.

#TfLArchitecture Balham was only three years after Clapham Common, but the difference in Holden's work is amazing. Much more spacious, and a style that is looking forward to Deco / Moderne and his great works of the 1930's. Also a WW2 tragedy not to forget.

First stop on the Northern Line for #TfLArchitecture is Brent Cross, a typical Edgware branch station enhanced by its Italianate frontage & the chequerboard tiled booking hall floor. I also liked the ironwork. The upstairs is less exciting, though.
Looking forward to this.
I was given this excellent map, by Mark Ovenden for Xmas, listing his 53 most interesting stations on the @TfL Underground. I intend to visit and tweet from all 53 over the next few weeks, starting today with the Northern Line. I will be using the #TfLArchitecture tag

The rebuilt East Finchley Underground Station opened on this day in 1939. The station had been served by LNER trains but was rebuilt to designs by Charles Holden, Leonard Bucknell and Ruth Ellis, for use by the Northern Line modernism-in-metroland.co.uk…
This is definitely a #RailwayTwitter kind of thing. Can anyone shed any light on this or even know where there’s an original? Has a feel of Stocks Austin Sice’s work on Railtrack’s annual reports but beyond that I’m stumped…

A few of the many Greyhound stations that have been torn down around the country (Omaha, Fort Wayne, Dayton, Cincinnati)
Network Rail's latest standard footbridge model has been prototyped - the AVA footbridge. Almost infinitely flexible and adaptable, and practically complete before it leaves the factory, it should only need a single possession to install it.
