In 2016, Dr. Katherine Horton gave a plain-English explanation of what she called remote neural monitoring. Her basic argument was that the brain produces measurable electrical activity, different actions and mental processes create recognizable patterns, and increasingly sensitive technology combined with computing could potentially identify those patterns and feed information back into the nervous system. She discusses reading electrical brain activity, reconstructing signal patterns, EEG, visual and auditory information, motor activity, subvocalization, and the possibility of using electromagnetic signals not only to monitor neural activity but to influence it. At the time, most people would’ve dismissed the entire conversation as science fiction. Then look at what happened publicly afterward. DARPA launched its N3 program to develop high-performance, bi-directional brain-machine interfaces for able-bodied service members. DARPA’s stated goal included technology capable of reading from and writing to multiple areas of neural tissue without surgery. Researchers were specifically working with electromagnetic, acoustic and optical approaches to encode and decode neural signals. darpa.mil/research/programs/… Researchers are now using EEG and artificial intelligence to classify imagined speech. A 2024 study reported approximately 77.8% average accuracy identifying a limited set of imagined English words, while broader reviews make clear that noninvasive thought decoding still has significant limitations. The FDA even has formal guidance for implanted brain-computer interfaces because neural interfaces have moved from theoretical neuroscience toward real medical technology.
