Braden Smith wasn’t supposed to carry all of this.
Not the expectations.
Not the pressure.
Not the weight of a program chasing something bigger.
But he did anyway.
From the moment he stepped on the floor — undersized, overlooked, doubted — he played like someone who had something to prove. Every possession. Every night. Every year.
He never asked for the spotlight.
He earned it.
Loose balls that left burns on the floor.
Passes threaded through impossible windows.
Minutes played through pain no one else saw.
Leadership that didn’t need words.
Just toughness. Just heart. Just Braden.
There were nights that hurt.
Losses that lingered.
Moments that would’ve been easier to walk away from.
But he stayed.
He got stronger.
He came back for more.
Because this was never about him.
It was about Purdue.
The jersey.
The teammates.
The belief that something special was still ahead.
Tonight… all of it lives in his hands.
Every assist.
Every dive.
Every ounce of fight he’s poured into this place.
Win… and the kid who gave everything gets one step closer to forever.
To Indy.
To a Final Four.
To the kind of moment legends are built from.
No shortcuts.
No fear.
No backing down.
Just Braden Smith…
heart on his sleeve…
leaving absolutely everything on the floor one more time.
If this is the ride…
he’s going full speed until the wheels fall off.
Boiler Up. 🚂

The Purdue guard is college basketball’s all-time leader in assists.

ICYMI - I watched every single Braden Smith pick and roll and analyzed what has made him so elite at it
I also included my favorite clip of his from his time in high school, one that made me realized he'd just be different than most players at the collegiate level

Underrated coaching truth:
Correction without connection feels like criticism.
But when players trust you,
even hard feedback helps them grow.
Build the relationship first.
Then raise the standard.

Talent is over-hyped.
- Are you on time?
- Do you work hard?
- Are you coachable?
- Can you be trusted?
- Do you accept your role?
- Do you help the team win?
- Do you make the right plays?
- Do you bring positive energy?
Talent, without the list above, is no fun for anyone.

It doesn’t matter how talented you are, if they don’t trust you.
It doesn’t matter how confident you are, if they don’t trust you.
It doesn’t matter how right you are, if they don’t trust you.
Leadership is rooted in trust.
Those who connect have a competitive advantage.

PLAYERS: Making excuses about why you aren't in the gym, the weight room, or at training sessions usually leads to bad habits. These bad habits will be the same ones that lead you to make excuses during the season as to why you are underperforming.

If you don’t believe, you won’t commit.
If you don’t believe, you won’t give your best.
If you don’t believe, you won’t endure.
If you don’t believe, you won’t overcome.
Belief is a competitive advantage.

A Strong Take:
Kids need truth tellers.
Raise them to be resilient, not fragile.
1. Sports are hard.
2. School is hard.
3. Life is hard.
But every time parents jump in to rescue…
Every time they blame the coach, the teacher, or the ref…
Every time they make excuses for their kid…
They rob their kids of the very things that build strength:
Adversity. Accountability. Growth.
Kids don’t need the world to be fair.
They need to learn how to respond when it’s not.
Let’s stop protecting them from the hard.
And start preparing them for it.

While some 7th grade Aau teams are playing 30-40 games in the 3 spring months, he plays minimal games and spends time in the gym just getting better. If you’re playing that many games, there’s a problem. @ginnyssmith

Most athletes train the body and "hope" that the mind follows.
But the true pros? They train both - on purpose, under pressure, and in real time.
