The engine would not fit. Ford had a 429 cubic-inch NASCAR motor so wide that a regular 1969 Mustang engine bay could not swallow it. Workers tore the front end apart by hand, moved the shock towers, yanked the air conditioning, and stuffed the battery in the trunk just to make room. Ford stamped the hood 375 horsepower.
