On KFTV yesterday, ESPN Front Office Insider Bobby Marks laid out a potential solution for the Knicks x KAT extension:
"There's nothing to say that he doesn't opt into that final year at $61 million. And then you start the extension in '28-'29... that would give you the ultimate flexibility.
That scenario could mean $180–190M in new guaranteed money for Towns.
What happens during the regular season? Is there a hard stance where he says, 'You know what? Once we get past Monday, October 19th, the last day of the offseason, I'm not talking about it anymore. We'll negotiate in the offseason here.'

Karl-Anthony Towns exerted some public pressure on NYK today in Philadelphia when he talked to reporters about his extension. How does this end? One side has to change its mind: do Knicks decide to go into 2nd apron or does Towns accepting offer he currently is unwilling to sign. If neither of those things happen, Towns can be a free agent this summer. Knicks presumably would not want to lose him in free agency without getting something in return
