ALT Face-on spiral galaxy, with tightly winding arms spiraling out clockwise. It looks like a whirlpool in water. The arms are lined with pink star-forming regions of glowing hydrogen and newborn blue star clusters. Dust lanes that provide the raw material for future generations of stars give the entire galaxy a dusky glow. The bright nucleus is home to an older population of stars, which grow ever more densely packed toward the center. The nucleus peers out of the center of the image like an eye. Scattered stars dot the background.

ALT This image shows the globe color coded to indicate its surface type. Most of the image is black to indicate calm water, the ocean, or dry sand. Rough water is depicted in shades of purple. The continents are shaded in green where there is vegetation, and white where there are urban areas or little vegetation.
