Raise your glasses and your blades to David Drake, born this day 81 years ago. Vietnam veteran, military scifi pioneer, and among the finest authors and champions of sword-and-sorcery that the genre has ever known. Does anybody here have a favorite David Drake story?

Lets take a moment to remember Tanith Lee today, on what would have been her 79th birthday. Lee straddled horror, fantasy, romance and science fiction in her sword-and-sorcery in a way few authors did. Do any of you have a favorite story by Tanith Lee?

Happy 134th birthday to another of the founding fathers of fantasy, Harold Lamb, whose historical adventure fiction following cossacks and crusaders influenced authors from Robert E. Howard to Howard Andrew Jones! Who among you has ridden the steppe with Lamb?

Born on this day 110 years ago, Jack Vance changed fantasy and sword-and-sorcery forever with the Dying Earth, a place where foul magics and often fouler men fought beneath the final light of the sun. Unforgettable, and Vance changes the way you look at magic forever.

Happy 74th Birthday to one of the living grandmasters of sword-and-sorcery, Darrell Schweitzer! His Sir Julian stories - all collected in WE ARE ALL LEGENDS - should be on the shelves of any fan of the genre.

I've been keeping my eyes on Lord of a Shattered Land for some time now, as the cover is incredible. Should I check it out?

I was cyberbullied (not really) by @SCWKorsgaard into picking this up. I've never read this before, so tell me what I'm in for. Wrong answers only.

I met Alyssa the day Howard died. Was at Marscon with Christopher Ruocchio when his wife called to tell me. I was gutted. Alyssa was (after Chris) the second person I talked to after that call. The story of that conversation - and the story it inspired - is in @BattlebornMag 2.

I want only 4 things: -the rich juices of red meat -stinging wine on my palate -the hot embrace of wanton arms -the mad exultation of battle when the blue blades flame and crimson And I am content.

Not many authors could have threaded the style of Tolkien, Howard, and Lovecraft, mixed in a love of Roman history, and made something unique the way that Richard L. Tierney did, born this day 90 years ago. His Simon of Gitta stories remain a sword-and-sorcery landmark.

One of the things I learned from Toni Weisskopf was the Red Line of Death. When a manuscript loses you for good. I have the Korsgaard addendum, the Green Line of Life. IE the moment an author hooked you for life. Example? Howard Andrew Jones, Lord of a Shattered Land, p. 44.

This scene from The Whole Wide World, a biography on the life of Robert E. Howard (originally written by his one time girlfriend, Novalyne Price), still gives me chills. This is Vincent D'Onofrio as REH explaining Conan to Novalyne, played by Renee Zellweger. – at Sandown, NH
