If the production of the Irigiri armoured personnel carrier had been continued by successive administrations & upgraded, perhaps Nigeria won't need to import different types of armoured vehicles that cost a lot compared to how cost friendly it would be to use what we make. (1)

Igirigi is no longer in production or use, but the ARA + Dodondawa MRAP, Danmiyaki + Viper ATVs & many other indigenous vehicles, UAVs/UGVs are. Let the entire 🇳🇬 security forces make great use of them & procure in bulk. WHATEVER IS WORTH DOING AT ALL, IS WORTH DOING WELL. (2)

The Nigerian-made Igirigi. The Igirigi APC was an indigenously produced armoured personnel carrier that was utilized by the Nigerian Army, Guards Brigade & Nigerian Army Special Forces Command (NASFC). It was then exported to 106th Brigade of the Libyan National Army (LNA). (1)

The Igirigi armoured personnel carrier was officially unveiled on July, 2012, by President Goodluck Jonathan, who inspected it at the Command & Staff College in Jaji, Kaduna State. The word Igirigi translates to dew in the Igbo language. (3)

NAEME (Nigerian Army Electrical & Mechanical Engineers) built it on a Ford chassis. It had an IED deflecting V hull & carried 8 troops. It was produced in significant numbers for COIN ops against Boko Haram and saw heavy combat and attrition due to lack of slat armour. End. (4)

Imagery from the Armed Forces and paramilitary shows Nigerian security forces still struggle to standardize and issue basic tactical gear. That has a direct, measurable impact on combat operations. Without widespread NVGs & thermal optics/sights for infantry units, (1)

Prioritizing big-ticket items (jets, helicopters, etc) over fundamental soldier systems will keep holding back COIN success. Wars are ultimately won and ground is held, by the infantry. An A-29 Super Tucano still needs a JTAC Airman on the ground. (3)

What needs to happen? Combine the industrial mandate of the 2023 DICON Act with strict purchase oversight & digitized logistics tracking. That's how the military can equip every soldier with basic combat gear & systematically replace soft skins with armoured vehicles. End. (4)

This is what the Conqueror would look like if it were worked on by a combined team from DICON, Army CED, Proforce & EPAIL. 1. Most of the items needed for the upgrade will be gotten from within the country, including the RCWS (EPAIL), ballistic glass, engine, CTIS, BMS & cameras.
Pictures showing locally made armoured personnel carriers of the Nigerian Army. 1. These vehicles, known as the Conqueror, were made by the Command Engineering Depot (CED) by welding a cab on the chassis of retired Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs). 2. Several units were made.

The eligible youths in the East must make a deliberate effort & ultimate decision to fill in all the slots in every agency, so as to meet the quota & Federal Character principle. Sadly, this low turnout isn't only for the Nigerian Army but extends to the Navy, Air Force & Police.
“As Commander here, during the last recruitment, Abia produced only about 100 recruits. I was worried because I felt I had failed my boss.” — Brigadier General Dikko A.M., Commander of the Ohafia Division, expresses disappointment over the low turnout of Igbo youths joining the Nigerian Army.

Lastly is poor welfare, using risks & rewards, the economic & physical risks of joining the Army doesn't outweigh the perceived benefits for youths engaged in commerce, etc. Protesting soldiers facing delayed pensions & inadequate allowances is enough deterrent to some youths.

Concluding this, I'll still urge eligible youths in the East to turn up for recruitment. Turning away from these kind of key exercises may not help, now & in the future. NOTE: ₦10 billion was lost each time sit-at-home was observed. Then how much more for key nat'l recruitments?
