Breaking in severe malaria. @rkalyes1 HLH features overlap with severe malaria criteria-- without the expected increase in mortality-- suggesting mimicry rather than a true HLH process.

So pleased to share this initiative to define the incidence of AKI in African children with severe malaria. So grateful to investigators who shared individual participant data. Nearly half of children are affected, and it increases mortality risk nearly 3X link.springer.com/article/10…

The latest from @BatteAnthony on AKI in children hospitalized with acute malnutrition, published in @KIReports. Despite low baseline creatinine, this vulnerable population is at risk of AKI and mortality. 🛑The ISN STOP AKI risk score performed poorly. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

ALT Graphical abstract showing study design: prospective observation cohort of 185 children with acute malnutrition. AKI was defined using KDIGO criteria using serial creatinine measures and tested whether a minimum creatinine threshold should be applied to improve classification and identify clinically meaningful thresholds where AKI was associated with mortality. In this population, applying a minimum creatinine threshold of 0.4mg/dL improved AKI identification associated with mortality. The ISN STOP AKI risk score had no ability to identify children at risk of AKI (AUROC: 0.5).

We have strong epidemiological ties between kidney disease and environmental exposures to water, food, and chemicals. However, we lack funding to conduct water testing or evaluate soil and foods. Looking for funds/ partners. @rkalyes1 @ISNkidneycare @valerie_luyckx

AKI is common in the neonatal intensive care unit & is assoc w/increased morbidity & mortality. Infants w/AKI in the NICU have higher risks of long-term kidney dysfunction. Read these Consensus Conference guidelines for outpatient kidney-focused follow-up.

With @WHO's support, @MinofHealthUG has started a vaccine trial against #Ebola Sudan virus today. The trial will enroll contacts of people with the disease, and contacts of the contacts.
This vaccination trial was initiated with record speed, only three days since the outbreak was declared, while ensuring full compliance with international and national regulatory and ethical requirements. It is also the first trial to assess the clinical efficacy of a vaccine against Ebola Sudan virus disease.
This trial demonstrates the importance of investing in R&D for vaccines and treatments and outbreak response preparedness, as well as partnerships. We thank @Makerere University and @UVRIug for their leadership, as well as @AfricaCDC, @CEPIvaccines, @EC_HERA and @IDRC_CRDI for their collaboration on this lifesaving effort.
WHO will continue supporting the government in a comprehensive response to bring the outbreak under control.

Dr.Peter Wasswa goes beyond the call of duty to take care of his patients,he is reliable, caring and compassionate. He is one of the best Hematologists and Child Oncologists in our country. It is therefore extremely saddening that out of the blue we woke up to an unexpected and devastating mudslinging story accusing him of being unprofessional.Whereas the family may have concerns and I appreciate those concerns,I think that Dr.Wasswa did do his best to save a life.I pray that justice prevails and the truth will be revealed. Many of Dr.Wasswa”s workmates and students have reached out to know how they can support him during this very tough period. We stand with Dr.Peter Wasswa.
