The thread was the short version.
The long one: brands built this game, the scammers just read the rules correctly.
decodenewsletter.substack.co…
So I stopped buying reach.
I build brand ambassadors instead.
Fewer people.
Longer terms.
They use the product, they get paid for consistency, and they grow with the brand instead of renting it out for a week.
The difference in one line:
A KOL sells you an audience for a campaign.
An ambassador builds one with you over a year.
One is a media buy.
The other is a partnership.
3. Volume & Sales fakers
Inflated screenshots.
Overlapping date ranges.
Borrowed dashboards.
Common enough that I verify every volume/sale claim before a conversation goes any further.
Not as an exception. As step one.
4. Content-payment hunters
They sell posts, not outcomes.
Fine as a business. But it’s a media buy, and most firms price it like an acquisition channel.
Then act surprised when nothing converts.
Most crypto industry KOLs are not partners. They’re vendors with a referral link. (Not to mention, most of the industry is full of scammers)
I’ve assessed several hundred of them.
Here’s why I stopped signing KOLs and started building brand ambassadors instead 🧵
1. Bonus hunters
They hop from program to program collecting signing bonuses.
Loud during the paid window. Gone the day it ends.
Loyal to the incentive, never to the product.
The system is broken at the root.
Companies pay for volume or sales.
KOLs deliver visibility (If they at least do the job you paid them for)
Pay for one thing, measure another, and you attract whoever is best at exploiting the difference.
Then you get four types.
Affiliate work is one of the least understood paths to income in crypto.
You earn from trading activity without trading. You earn from markets without being profitable in them.
It's media leverage, borrowed from other people's audiences and structured commercially.
Most crypto companies get KOL partnerships wrong in the same way.
They find a trader with an audience and expect them to also be a performance marketer
Conversion infrastructure is the company's job ⬇
Creator supplies audience and trust, and gets paid for content plus performance.
Company supplies the funnel, and gets paid in the volume that funnel converts.
Neither gets blamed for the other's job.
Important day for markets ahead. #FOMC
