Cities are the heartbeat of Africa but rapid urban growth is also straining our environment. From crowded streets to rising temperatures, climate change is already shaping how we live, work, and move.
Mazingira Day is a reminder that solutions are within our reach: renewable energy, cleaner transport, and smarter urban planning can protect our air, our health, and our future. Every choice we make in our cities matters for the planet we leave behind.
Letโs celebrate Mazingira Day by reimagining our cities as places where people and nature thrive together.

We work incredibly hard to earn foreign exchange through tea, coffee, flowers, horticulture and tourism. Yet, a significant share of it flows straight back out of the country to pay for the fuel that powers our economy.
In a recent opinion piece on @BD_Africa , our Managing Director Moses Nderitu examines what this means for Kenyaโs economy and the opportunity electric mobility presents to reduce our dependence on imported fuel, retain more foreign exchange within the country and build a more resilient transport system.

Can an electric bus make the journey from Nairobi to Moyale?โก
The answer is yes. Three of our electric buses just did.
The three electric buses covered 776 km from Nairobi to Moyale as part of the Road to Addis Ababa expedition, which concludes at the Nordic-Africa EV Summit in Addis Ababa today.
Organised by GIZ and Advanced Mobility, the expedition put electric mobility to the test and showed what is possible when EVs are supported by the right charging infrastructure.
Along the way, the buses recharged at our fast DC charging stations in Thika and Nanyuki, while a portable charger supported charging in Marsabit.
Itโs a practical demonstration of what an expanding charging ecosystem can unlock. As charging infrastructure reaches beyond major cities and along key travel corridors, electric vehicles can go further and take on longer-distance routes.
776 km later, the road to longer-distance electric transport is looking a lot less daunting.

Our CEO and Co-founder, Jit Bhattacharya, recently joined BloombergNEFโs Switched ON podcast to discuss the technologies shaping the energy transition, alongside fellow 2026 BNEF Pioneers Wildcard winners.
In the episode, Jit shares more about BasiGoโs financing model, the potential to scale electric public transport across Africa and what it takes to drive greater adoption of electric buses among operators.

Fuel prices can change the economics of running a public transport business overnight. We saw this first hand as global supply disruptions, driven by conflict in the Middle East and the war involving Iran, pushed fuel prices higher and placed additional pressure on transport operators.
For operators covering hundreds of kilometres every day, fuel is one of their biggest recurring expenses, and rising prices can quickly eat into their margins.
That is why this yearโs ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฒ theme, โ๐๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐: ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐จ๐ ๐๐จ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ,โ deeply resonates with us at BasiGo. It is at the heart of what we do.
Through our Pay-As-You-Drive (PAYD) model, we are helping public transport operators make the switch to electric without the high upfront cost of purchasing an electric bus.
By combining the lower running costs of electric mobility with a financing model built around how buses actually operate, we are making it easier for operators to move away from fuel price volatility and towards more predictable transport costs.
While switching to electric is about driving cleaner, it is also about driving down costs, strengthening the economics of public transport, and making sustainable mobility a more viable option for operators.
This World EV Day, we celebrate the operators already making the switch and the opportunity to make electric public transport accessible to many more.
