This June in Dharchula, a GDS was moved after villagers complained mail hadn’t been delivered for months, and inspectors found 50 to 60 Aadhaar cards lying undelivered. This isn’t about where anyone comes from. Every young person deserves a fair chance at a job anywhere in India. The problem is a system that picks candidates only on board marks, without checking whether they can actually do the work. The rules even say candidates must know the local language. So who’s checking? Former dayitvadhari Mahendra Lunthi and Hotel Association president Rajendra Bhatt have demanded a probe into how so many students keep scoring 100%, and why such high scorers are applying for a GDS job. A dak sevak in the hills isn’t just delivering letters. They handle pensions, savings and Aadhaar cards for elderly people in remote villages. When the person behind the counter can’t read the language of the people they serve, it’s the villagers who suffer.
