I just feel gross about how “our country” (really one man) is disrespecting hundreds of dead friends who went halfway around the world after my city was attacked.
The number of times I saw non-American flag draped coffins in Afghanistan was not insignificant. The ignorance some display on X regarding what allies have done for the U.S. is embarrassing.

A local democratic committee I work for is sending comms encouraging all registered dems to either vote in person or drop their mail ballots off at an early voting site.
Early vote data across the county, but especially in Nevada, increasingly suggest that concerns about USPS handling of mail ballots are changing how some Democrats vote, complicating comparisons with 2024. Per @JohnRSamuelsen’s comparisons, Democrats appear to be shifting toward early in-person voting and dropping off their mail ballots, while Republicans are becoming more comfortable voting by mail. That would help explain why Clark County’s initial mail returns looked so much better for Republicans: the Democratic registration advantage fell from 18.6 points in the comparable 2024 snapshot to about 7.5 points in 2026. But as Saturday’s likely drop-offs entered the totals, the picture changed sharply. Two later batches were D+31 and D+38.8. Democrats’ weaker initial mail numbers seem to partly reflect voters choosing to bypass USPS, rather than slacking in initial turnout. This pattern has held somewhat across the country, as in-person early voting has been very blue while mail ballot returns have been more lackluster for Democrats than expected. There are certainly other possible explanations contributing to these dynamics, including the continued unwinding of COVID-era voting patterns, when absentee ballots were generally more Democratic. But the sharp Democratic shift in Nevada’s mail returns that appear to include substantial numbers of drop-offs rather than ballots sent through USPS, is strong evidence that more may be happening here. Anyway, I do think there's solid data to support that concerns about postal delivery, amplified by media and political leaders, are encouraging Democrats to deliver their ballots themselves or vote in person. These concerns include both changes already in effect, such as transportation changes that can delay postmarks, and restrictions that were ultimately blocked. On Sept. 14, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration’s request to allow new USPS mail-in voting restrictions to take effect for the November 2026 midterms. Those restrictions remain blocked, but the concerns they generated may still be influencing how Democrats choose to vote.

“Willing to very publicly and strongly crack down on the hilltop youth” is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the next Israeli government to even hope of beginning to repair its relationships in America and I pray they realize that - but don’t think they do

After a week of vacay and week of flu, I’m back! I’m also proud to report I finished The Power Broker after spending 12+ years trying to do so! (Do we get varsity jackets for this?) A big thank you to my @merrillcollege prof @rwells1961 for sending me the book way back when.

A view of Toronto from the islands, just offshore in Lake Ontario. Taken last September. Lake Ontario is really beautiful when it’s sunny out.

Pepperidge farms remembers.
Hey remember when Wemby punched Jalen Brunson in the head, Spurs fans pretended it was fine & called the Knicks soft only for their team to choke and get destroyed 5 games, including the greatest collapse in the history of an NBA Finals game? Good stuff.

Gotta say, something truly awe inspiring about a total eclipse (prior photos are progression from 10%, and I love how the camera picked up effectively the reflection of the silhouette on one)

Having just used paid ChatGPT to help me with some excel work that I could have muddled through, I now understand why coding people swear by GenAI. It really translated clear commands in plain english into consistent fixes across thousands of lines.

I have also been using it for more "fun" projects that require generating prose, and there it regurgitates my inputs back to me and makes errors that would be problems if I didn't know off the top of my head they were clearly wrong (e.g a flight from ATL to HPN isn't 25 min!)

Pretty much.
Most important midterm race for setting up the 2028 primary is clearly Michigan. If El-Sayed wins nom and general, progressives proved they can win a big swing state; El-Sayed instantly becomes one of the most prominent Dem senators, and advocate for AOC ‘28. If El-Sayed wins nom and loses to Rogers, the center-left can (and will) blame the left for losing a MI Senate seat that’s been blue since the 90s; El-Sayed becomes a cautionary tale of voting for a charismatic left-winger and handing the W to Republicans. If Stevens wins nom and general, not much changes, but the left doesn’t have a swing state story to tell. If Stevens wins nom and loses to Rogers, the left can say: See? See? You idiots pulled out the stops for your candidate and she blew it. Hand over the keys.
