Proud to formally announce my book, AUGUSTA: AN AMERICAN MUSE, coming in 2027. AUGUSTA expands on my November 2024 profile for @VanityFair, the second most read piece in the magazine that year, to cover the full half decade relationship between Augusta Britt and Cormac McCarthy.
The Norm MacDonald documentary is terrible. They’ve totally cucked him. In choosing to construct it out of the most normie content of Norm’s cult YouTube videos they’ve destroyed the draw of those very videos.
They treat him as a cult icon of all comedians in the beginning and somehow don’t include his 9/11 content, his holocaust denying ventriloquist dummy, his announcing that Andy Richter is a heterosexual fan of gay porn on Conan in the 90s, his homeless bum stories. They do the Hitler’s dog bit…
I’ve been watching Norm clips since 2017. If this was my introduction to him I’d look down at him as overhyped and lame. As corny and uninteresting.
The appeal of Norm is of an unsuspecting stranger saying the most unexpected yet well timed and hysterically genius comment in the corner of a bar. Messing with you and wasting your time for fifteen minutes. This doesn’t capture him at all.
Just YouTube Norm on your own for two hours, which incidentally is the entire structure of the movie.

No disrespect to Prof. @AlexKontorovich. This is however exactly what I have been warning you about.
It takes guts to admit that we are training people today for jobs that used to exist 55 years ago. And that is what got said.
Remember what I am claiming: top students used to survive in mathematics. See the graphics attached from top advisors in the earlier era when jobs existed...the students survived! It was never as Alex portrayed it to be. No current advisor anywhere has these kind of survival statistics. That is what is being covered up. And there are MANY MANY more advisors who shouldn't be advising a single PhD student. Ever.
We were training our future colleagues. Now we are exploiting workers misclassified as students so we can import them in massive numbers and work them in a plantation system. The students generally don't survive. And then we lie about them and say that they weren't good enough! That is literally how the system was rearchitected when the jobs stagnated over 55 years ago. And the sharp elbows edge out the sharpest minds often in the academic hunger games. Literally that is what happened. That's why the greats mostly dried up.
Now we have *worse* mathematicians on average who are more incrementalist survivalists than romantic heroes and we are stuck pretending that there has not been a massive decline from the Grothendieck, Mllnor, von Neumman, Atiyah, Serre era.
I am not blaming Prof. @AlexKontorovich. He has survived and I salute that. But make no mistake, he never saw the system that actually worked. I barely did when I was around 20 and it was already in flames.
But unlike Alex, I was often in the room in the 1990s in Washington DC when the post-cold war sausage was being made at NSF and on the Hill. And what we did was to largely destroy the university system.
Read what he writes. He is talking about the Hunger Games where one of the most important mathematicians, Zhang, worked at @subway and that is just fine. It's like training highly specialized neurosurgeons to be baristas or call center operators. It just doesn't make any sense and the mathematics community does not notice that it is operating a planation where it has to dispose of bodies and train our geopolitical rivals in sensitive subjects to stay afloat.
I am sorry. But we went mad under Reagan and then insane under Clinton. This actually makes no sense now and made no sense then when I tried to stop it.
It's a suicidal plantation economics operation that makes us weak and our geopolitical rivals strong. Full Stop. That's all there is to it.
In the US, we graduate on the order of 1000 math PhDs a year, and there are about 300 postdoc jobs (and ~70 tenure track jobs three years later). So no, a math PhD is not, and has never been, a "gold medal" (in the sense of an academic position).
And is "merit" about potential or about actual results? I really hope it's not the former (which is much more error prone to measure)!
About Zhang specifically, there's much more to his story than what's been reported, and it's devastating how much he suffered before his breakthrough.

I’ll be happy to give you a f___ing break when you present evidence for IIT or any other theory which is close to that supporting Orch OR.
Replying to @StuartHameroff
The space between electrons keep growing and science keeps pushing things back, yet you treat suggestive MT-anesthesia correlations as decisive proof that quantum collapses in microtubules generate consciousness and falsify IIT.
Room-temp optical effects and a drug delaying isoflurane in rats are interesting. They do not demonstrate required coherence timescales in living neurons, nor Penrose OR producing experience, nor that classical mechanisms are ruled out. Calling IIT (and everything else) falsified while declaring Orch-OR the sole theory with evidence is hilarious. Shermer’s “quackery” was blunt; the certainty still outruns the data. Give me a fucking break, guy!

Amazing read. The one thing I found confusing was the claim that Nietzsche’s flaw is sociological. Following the essay’s argument we can only conclude that Nietzsche’s flaw, from the start, was entirely christian.

Bill Gates being the undisputed richest guy in the world and spending all his money on mosquito nets, versus Musk building starships and doing stuff like this pretty well sums up where we were in the first part of the century v. now.
Whitepill.
I listened too much to Nietzsche as a teenager and stayed away from Plato. Taking a Symposium on The Republic in college confirmed to me every exciting prejudice Nietzsche held against Socrates.
I had learned from Nietzsche the great principle that just because something is rational and works logically does not mean it is true, and argued against Plato from the perspective of Nietzsche's unpublished philosophical history of the pre-Socratics, Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks.
One can see in this text how Nietzsche's anti-Platonism predates Socrates; derives from Socrates' predecessors. In an eccentric use of prefixes, Socrates is really an anti-pre-Socratic, and Nietzsche's anti-Platonism a form of pre-Socraticism extended into his modern age.
However, Plato's non-political dialogues are incredible works. His speculations on cosmogony; the creation of man (anthropogony) and the elements; his engagement with Anaxagoras (pre-Socratic)'s cosmos. There are parts of Timeaus that Nietzsche never touched. There is an antechristian (read that prefix correctly) freedom present in the extant corpus of the Ancient Greeks that Nietzsche cannot always embody, and this flaw in Nietzsche is a sociological one I don't think he with all his dynamite could help. It principally concerns cosmogony and anthropogony.
The ancient Greeks were free to speculate on the total creation of the universe and presuppose whatever they pleased, whatever they intuited. In turn, they intuited the atom, the law of the conservation of energy, and quantum superposition to name a few. It is ironic that despite being drawn to the pre-Socratics for this kind of freedom, the closest Nietzsche ever comes to speculating on the order of the universe is his Eternal Return, a beautiful idea but not quite a cosmogony, which many of his followers assert was merely a poetic thought experiment.
In some sense, all of the development of intellectualism since the Christianization (and subsequent collapse) of Rome can be seen as either the gradual unyoking from the absurd existential centralization and enslavement of an unnecessary monotheism's prohibition on all deviational inquiry; or the unconscious adaption to the peculiar concepts of this monotheism derived in tents by obscure tribes who cut parts of their penises off.
The direction one rebels in from Christianity and Abrahamic monotheism is still defined by Christianity and Abrahamic monotheism. Your opposition is dictated by it, is attached to it, is a reaction against it. You travel from it only so far as you react against it.
Atheism is just such an ultimately shallow reaction against Christian hegemony. It is an invention of Christian hegemony. It is, genealogically speaking, Christian hegemony as applied to a state of godlessness. Atheism is just as rigid and religious; its God is the immutable, timeless "laws" and "constants" of nature that can admit of no heresies.
As a political organ, as a STATE and civilization, Judaeo-Christianity made such a purchase on the very concept of cosmogony and anthropogony and precluded by death free speculation on it for so many centuries that, even to a mind as genius as Nietzsche, the Judaeo-Christian cosmogonies are nearly synonymous in his gut with the concept of cosmogony in general.
Of course Nietzsche was aware of all religions and ideas concerning the origin and functioning of the universe and of man. But like many geniuses long under the yoke of the Bible's antiquated ridiculousness enforced by rote upon them; enforced as THE origin and truth; historical arguments and philosophies against "God" conflate themselves with arguments and philosophies against god, so to speak. Platonism was adapted to Christianity through neo-Platonism; however, Platonic or even pre-Socratic cosmogonies were never adapted to post-Christian or atheistic philosophy. Nietzsche never quite bothers arguing against Plato's versions of cosmogony. When God died, all possible prime movers went with Him.
We see here one part of the fissuring of true philosophy and the fatal specialization of the modern age. Cosmogony breaks down into godless cosmology; philosophy, having finally destroyed the political and sociological monopoly of Christianity, concerns itself strictly with politics and sociology and ignores cosmology to its malnourishment; by Marx and by progressivism, philosophy BECOMES the chora, the raw material of atheist religion and mass hysteria; speculation on God and cosmogony remain, therefore, with the religious and the UAP enthusiast, half of whom try to interpret UAPs into Christianity.
If you concern your pursuit of knowledge strictly with political and sociological genealogy; if you confuse metaphysics with atheistic terrestrial paradoxes; if you don't take Eternal Return seriously; if you try to re-relate the cosmos and prime mover to Abrahamic traditions and concepts, then you "walk lame to the end of your life," as Plato says of men who shirk education.
Nietzsche is a consequential piece of pre-Socratic dynamite that points its escape velocity back to the true freedom of the Greeks. He did not make it all the way there, but that is not a flaw. You can only travel so far.

I will see 0/4 of these movies. When is the Evelyn Waugh biopic?
Sony is considering releasing all 4 ‘BEATLES’ biopics on the same day in April 2028.
Another idea being considered is offering a 4-pack of tickets to encourage fans to buy tickets to all 4 films at once.

🔮 CAN AI PREDICT THE FUTURE??
Palantir CEO Alex Karp said AI could foresee what people think and do in their everyday lives.
By tracking what people buy, what they post online, where they go, and more, AI could learn to anticipate their next move.
The technology builds on tools already used by the U.S. military and its allies.
It sounds like some distant sci-fi nightmare...
That we could awake to tomorrow.

Eric gets no love for this, I assure you. Nor do I. It's the weirdest thing. A story that we were raised to find fascinating -- and rightly so -- begins to move into the light, but paying serious attention to it draws organized hostility.
