A very good and timely conversation with UK Prime Minister @AndyBurnham. Thank you for the support and for your condolences to all those who have lost loved ones because of Russian attacks. I briefed the Prime Minister on such Russian strikes that have continued unabated throughout the day today against various Ukrainian cities – aerial bombs, “shaheds,” ballistic missiles. Air defense is, of course, the first priority. And, importantly, there should be real decisions to protect lives in Ukraine and to support our joint work in Europe for security. British leadership is always significant, and it matters that the UK will continue to ramp up sanctions pressure on Russia for its escalation. We discussed this and what could truly help diplomacy work. We are preparing the right joint steps and a meeting. Thank you.

It really is quite remarkable that the Green Party has decided that anyone who believes in a two-state solution* to the Israel-Palestine problem is a “racist”. *Improbable as such a solving may be now.

The disproportionate and bullying commentary and coverage of Jason Arday’s mistakes has been obviously dangerous for days. Yes it was a legitimate story, and in various ways a troubling one. But the relentless coverage, the vitriol and bile. The clip of a man talking about us needing more love in the world endlessly mocked. Compare it to the way others who embellished and invented life stories or floated seemingly naive ideas are forgiven. Obviously employers have duties of care. But spare us the pity of those who weaponised his story for social media clicks without a thought.

Does anyone on the planning committee at Glasgow City Council have eyes? Even by recent standards, this is astonishingly bad. @PaulJSweeney @is_glasgow @MurphyNiallGLA

It is quite extraordinary that in modern Scotland these two statements each appear to be true. 1. The Glasgow School of Art is the greatest and most important building in Scotland. 2. We can't be bothered to rebuild and restore it to its former glory. thetimes.com/uk/scotland/art…

The murder rate in the U.K. is at a fifty year low. The rate in London is 10% of the murder rate in Chicago or Philadelphia. You have just killed or gravely wounded a million Russian men for nothing. Maybe worry about that?
The US is moving away from what became of the UK model.

🔴 Harold Wilson’s vision was for Britain to remain a mixed economy with a strong industrial base, strategic public ownership, North Sea resources used for national renewal, and a partnership with Europe. 🇳🇴 Norway followed something much closer to that path. 🇬🇧 Britain took a different route: Financial deregulation and the growing dominance of the City. Large-scale privatisation. Selling off strategic national assets. North Sea oil revenues largely used to fund current spending and tax cuts rather than building a sovereign wealth fund. An economy increasingly dependent on finance, property and consumption rather than production. 🇳🇴 Norway did almost the opposite: Created the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund. Retained significant public ownership in energy. Invested resource wealth for future generations. Maintained a broad industrial base alongside its financial sector. Stayed inside the European Economic Area, preserving full access to the Single Market. Britain then added Brexit on top of that divergence.
There are suggestions that Burnham may be planning to blame Thatcher for Britain's problems. Given that she was last in power 36 years ago and that you'd have to be in your mid-50s to have ever voted for her, this feels like a stretch and a half.

People versus the establishment? Are you kidding? Nigel Farage is the son of a stockbroker who went to Dulwich College and then follows his dad into the city, gets gifted millions, promotes crypto and gold bullion, been in politics for decades - he IS the establishment
The establishment smears and attacks have crossed a line. Nigel is absolutely right to call a by-election. This is now about the people v the establishment.

The predictable outrage over Kate Forbes at the ARC event is mind-numbing. I once spent two days at a small defence and security event in Prague. As well as policy experts and figures from defence forces across Europe, it included one of Trump’s National Security Advisers, Orban’s then Chief of Staff, the head of the Margaret Thatcher Centre think tank in DC, and social democrat, conservative and green politicians from across Europe. We debated, agreed on some things and disagreed on others, without the sky falling in. We did, however, gain knowledge and better understand different and competing perspectives. Politicians talking to people they disagree with is part of the job - though worth pointing out that Kate is now a private citizen.

Greater Glasgow has become the 'Cinderella' of the big British city regions over the last 25 years because of a relentless centralisation in Edinburgh that has left the West of Scotland in relative decline. It's time to redress the regional power balance in Scotland. – at Glasgow, Scotland
Andy Burnham says he will offer "new opportunities to extend devolution in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland by taking power deeper down". He adds: "The people of Dundee and Bangor feel just as distant from Holyrood and the Senedd as they do from Westminster".

Despite strong opposition and Paul’s best efforts, Glasgow City Council has voted in favour of further vandalism of our architectural heritage. The SNP members on the committee voted to allow demolition of this historic building. Utterly depressing. Roll on next year’s election.
Despite my efforts, and a tied vote, Councillors decided that the historic Hillhead Baptist Church is to be demolished after 143 years standing proudly on the corner of Cresswell Street and Cranworth Street. A depressing outcome.

Brazen racist thuggery on Buchanan Street and St. Enoch Square last night. The atmosphere was toxic. They are an embarrassment to the people of Glasgow. There is no justification.

A bold approach, this, from Reform UK as PSNI say he was granted leave to remain in Sept 2023, when Suella Braverman was Home Sec and Robert Jenrick was immigration minister. Genuinely interested in thinking behind it.
