The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

One of the most interesting things about researching "American Pope" was seeing the first-hand evidence of how Vatican II changes the parish Leo XIV grew up in.
He was preparing for communion when Vatican II began!

Dear friends: Yesterday two fantastic books were published, both from @MacmillanUSA, and both of which I've read cover to cover. First, "The Italian Job," by @jasondhorowitz, the story not only of his time as the former @nytimes Rome bureau chief, but really how he fell in love with all things Italian (including his wife). It's by turns wry, insightful and touching. The next is "American Pope," a deeply researched and compelling bio of @Pontifex by @scottdetrow and Daniel Burke of @NPR. They've traveled and researched widely to bring you a superb book that tells the story of how Father Bob became Pope Leo. Be sure to read both!

This icon of Our Lady of Pompeii in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception always makes me chuckle because it looks like Mary has dropped her rosary and is leaning over to pick it up, while happy baby Jesus is getting ready to swing his like a little lasso.
Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us.

St. Rosalia, pray for us! To be closer to God she lived her life in the seclusion of a cave & practiced many penitential acts. You can still visit the sanctuary of Saint Rosalia in Palermo Sicily. bit.ly/2TglIW9

“I came without a speech, because I’m hungry.
“I’m hungry for justice, hungry for authentic charity, hungry for a Church that truly knows how to open the doors, welcome, receive everyone, where there is love for all and where no one is an enemy.”

July 7 is the feast day of the Ulma family.
It’s not the day they were killed.
It’s not the day they took in 2 Jewish families to hide them from the Nazis.
It’s not the day they bought their farm, or built their house, or opened a business, or had a child.
July 7 is the day Josef & Wiktoria were married. Their family’s feast day is their wedding anniversary.
Your marriage is a mission. Your family’s birthday is a launchpad to holiness. It is a path to heaven.
Ulma family, pray for us.

HAPPY 250th USA! A good day to remember this iconic 1984 photo of construction worker Anthony Soraci, grandson of Italian immigrants, leaning in to kiss the Statue of Liberty while on scaffolding during restoration work.

Immerse yourself in the charity of that lovable heart so that you never act toward your neighbor in a manner which would offend that virtue—never doing to others what you would not wish them to do to yourself.

I loved this episode!
Delighted to share this conversation with Katie Prejean McGrady @KatiePMcGrady on the latest episode of "The Spiritual Life." We talk about the resurgence of interest in Catholicism, youth ministry, and a spirituality of family life. It's a great convo!
