People read one emotional Matt Green tweet about public key encryption, spent 0 seconds thinking about it, and decide to panic.
Sure ECDLP will be broken with QC's one day. But there's so many levels to this being wrong to panic over.
- 0 actual progress on attacking anything
- We have tons of alternate plans available.
- Quadratic advantage hash-based PKE
- Lattices
- Multivariate polynomials
- A whole field of KEM's from fine grained cryptanalysis. (Fun fact, works even if P=NP)
Sure you can wake-up and choose doomer and be wrong.
We have decades of cryptography to draw from on for all the above options, AND how to build a lot of what we want from UX tweaks without PKE. PKE just made a lot much easier, and less web of trust routing like.

"Shielded Bitcoin" is 2018 Zcash with all of Bitcoin's baggage.
I feel bad for the authors. It's a solid take on Zcash's initial design, hamstrung by Bitcoin's refusal to meaningfully upgrade. The irony is that the people hyping it are the reason it's hamstrung.
Every private transaction pays a non-private BTC fee, which severely complicates privacy.
Proofs need a trusted setup because newer schemes won't fit in OP_RETURN.
And even if you fixed that, the peg runs on actual moon math that hasn't been published yet: witness encryption. Which is legitimately awesome if it works, but a massive amount of complexity and, unless I'm missing something, inherently trusted setup.

The entire market cap of Zcash telling you it wasn't exploited. No-one cogently stands behind the game theory of an attacker or how the pool isn't drained yet.
Its been formally verified to have no other undetectable soundness bug possible. So it can't happen again.
