10/10s - 2026 update (alphabetized)
I only sparingly give 10s so as not to devalue its impact.
For me, 10/10 doesn’t necessarily mean flawless (though I believe some of these are), but rather a game that is close to perfect, or hits my threshold for peak enjoyment.
The complete degradation of Konami over the last 2+ decades is quite something.
They went from arguably the best developer and publisher on the planet, making medium-defining games like MGS 1-3, Silent Hill 1-3, SotN, Aria, Rondo, and Suikoden II to… whatever they’re doing now.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse

Unfortunately, unremarkable.
Homogenous visuals between areas, garish art, borderline cringeworthy writing, subpar music, undercooked charm system, lacking enemy variety.
Bosses, combat, platforming all solid but nothing we haven’t seen before.
Mother 3

People act like this is the Second Coming. I’m sorry, but… I just don’t see it.
The gameplay isn’t good enough.
Writing, characters, world building, charm, visuals, music - all super good. Story is very good, though I have qualms with the lore dump in the 11th hour.
I can see why people love this because it definitely has a unique charm that feels distinct, probably the best visuals on the GBA, interesting themes about love and loss, consumerism, etc, but the actual game just isn’t that fun to PLAY, to me
Finishing up Mother 3 over the next couple days then jumping into Belmont’s Curse
Honestly a little mild on Mother 3 but we’ll see how the last stretch ends
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2

It weird to view these as two different games since they’re basically disc 1 and 2 of a larger game.
Honestly, it’s amazing how SMT tries and makes every RPG system work; this time w/ a set party and FFX adjacent ability grid.
The main thing that holds these games back a bit - the random encounter rate will pummel you into submission.
It’s akin to Nocturne, but unlike SMT3 whose random encounters add to its lonely/liminal atmosphere, I think DDS would’ve benefitted from visible enemies in dungeons.
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX (replay)

Sorta confused how to rate this because the actual game design is good, but the experience neutered by only having two action buttons.
Constantly navigating menus is not fun. Solid game, but not one of my favorite Zeldas.
6/10
