“Primaries are for the parties. They should decide who votes.”
FACT:
In Pennsylvania, primaries are public elections, paid for by taxpayer dollars.
That means everyone helps fund them, but not everyone gets a ballot.
Today is Independence Day, which marks the date on which the Declaration of Independence affirmed that true government rests on the consent of the governed. “No taxation without representation” wasn’t just a slogan—it was a founding principle that has guided our country since.
Yet today, 1.4 million independent voters in PA are barred from the primaries their taxes help fund.
They pay into democracy, but are kept on the sidelines.
This Independence Day, we must stand for full representation. Closed primaries silence voices and weaken our democracy.

According to a recent Franklin & Marshall College poll, 31% of PA voters would register as independent if closed primaries were repealed in the PA. This would finally allow voters to choose their party without fear of having their voices silenced.
