Senegal 🇸🇳 was a moving experience. The purpose to ensure that not only are we playing music that’s rooted in contemporary Mande tradition but also rooted in a tangible experience…
Yahael had always wanted the band to go back home, to acknowledge the importance of identity, of going to a place where we originate from, the importance of being in a place where you are not othered. Where you see yourself reflected in the people and in the landscape.

Balimaya Project, is a London-based 16 piece collective, uniquely fusing West-African folkloric music and jazz.
Formed in 2019 by percussionist Yahael Camara Onono.
The word Balimaya from the Maninka language, means the essence of kinship.. and is engrained in the moral fabric of the Mande people, which is what inspires Balimaya’s mission.
Bandleader Yahael pays homage to his Senegalese, Nigerian cultural roots throughout the music.
Yahael joins us this Sunday and we are exploring the life and times of this exciting ensemble, listening to some of their music along the way.
