'Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green' released on this day in 2005. An underwhelming tie-in game to the underwhelming Romero zombie flick. Suffers from monotonous combat, braindead enemy AI, and haphazard level design. Its multiplayer mode did manage some longevity on PC.

'Skull Island: Rise of Kong' released on this day in 2023. Developed in a year's time by a studio working on behalf of GameMill, clearly hoping to capitalize on Kong's modern film resurgence. Widely mocked for its poor presentation, sub-par gameplay, and litany of glitches.

'007 Legends' released on this day in 2012. Activision's final title with the James Bond license. Intended to serve as a celebration of the film franchise's 50th anniversary - reinterpreting past movies as missions - the game was slammed as a half-hearted "Call of Duty clone."

In truth, I think the game is mostly fine: It's neat to revisit those classic films as Daniel Craig Bond, even if some of the choices are questionable. ('Die Another Day?' Really?) The biggest criticism should be the fact that its PC release has completely broken mouse input.

'Night Trap' released on this day in 1992. Perhaps the poster child for both the Sega CD and the whole FMV genre. A campy experiment in tedious memorization, most infamous for its involvement in a Senate hearing which threatened the legal status of the American games industry.

'Ju-on: The Grudge' released on this day in 2009. Described as a "haunted house simulator," intended to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Ju-On film franchise. Sluggish traversal is occasionally punctuated by laughable attempts at jump scares, but mostly by tedious QTEs.

'Duke Nukem 3D' on the Sega Mega Drive released on this day in 1998. Tec Toy's "conversion" of Duke 3D to the Mega Drive is nothing short of a technical marvel. Unfortunately; it is also frustratingly clunky, notoriously difficult, and challenging to even visually parse.

There's actually a lot to be said about this curious cartridge: We could highlight its technical achievements, try to appreciate the unique level designs, or even compare its content to the original game. Anyway, here's a funny version of "Grabbag": youtube.com/watch?v=GR4EknwS…

'Link: The Faces of Evil' and 'Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon' released on this day in 1993. Developed under a licensing agreement, owing to Nintendo's dealings with Philips. These two action-adventure Zelda titles have gone down in infamy, primarily for their uncanny animation.

For gameplay pain points: Poor collision detection, unclear background elements, and clumsy control mapping are the major culprits. All told, both games would've likely flown under the radar as "passable" genre titles, if not for their odd connection to the Zelda franchise.

'Yaris' released on this day in 2007. A free XBLA advergame intended to promote a line of Toyota vehicles, by depicting them as carrying an assortment of laser weapons fit to fend off foes. Delisted after a year due to overwhelming negative reception / widespread mockery.

'Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal' released on this day in 2007. Ratchet & Clank by way of the Merrie Melodies gang, developed by the short-lived Australian studio "Redtribe." A truly tedious slog made all the more frustrating by half-baked co-op and faux-"Disc Read Errors."

'Balls of Fury' released on this day in 2007. A critically panned video game tie-in to a critically panned film of the same name. A no-frills (if not imprecise) ping pong game, with the additional wrinkle of awkwardly-rendered actor likenesses. Truly, a game no one asked for.
