From the new version of Sense & Sensibility: "I think a man ought to be at least artificially passionate, or he'd be sincerely dull."
Heard this & instantly thought of bored preachers & boring preaching. I'm not for "artificial," but preachers ought to be riveted & riveting.
The Lord Jesus:
βSee that no one leads you astrayβ¦. you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.β
βBe of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man. We shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.β
It is only by the Person and Work of Christ that our rebellion is mortified and our spiritual orphanhood healed.
Evidently, it is quite possible to be willing to die a martyrβs death without having loveβ and to gain nothing by that death. (see 1 Cor. 13.3)
The trouble is, we think we need the world so badly and have little conception as to how badly we need God.
Do not let your device screens serve as grow-lights for the weeds of distraction and spiritual lethargy.
Spurgeon: "Churches without elders are like an army without officers. Those err greatly who despise order."
A great number of biblical prophecies were fulfilled to a tee at Christβs 1st Advent.
A great number of biblical prophecies will likewise be fulfilled to a tee at Christβs 2nd Advent.
Knowing the difference between the two is vital for interpretation, obedience, and hope.
βYou have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming.β βPaul and he apostle
Horatius Bonar (1843) -
βGo, labor on; spend, and be spent,
thy joy to do the Father's will;
it is the way the Master went;
should not the servant tread it still?
Go, labor on; 'tis not for naught;
thine earthly loss is heav'nly gain;
men heed thee, love thee, praise thee not;
the Master praises- what are men?
Go, labor on; enough while here
if He shall praise thee, if He deign
thy willing heart to mark and cheer;
no toil for Him shall be in vain.
Go, labor on while it is day:
the world's dark night is hast'ning on.
Speed, speed thy work, cast sloth away;
It is not thus that souls are won.
Toil on, faint not, keep watch and pray;
be wise the erring soul to win;
go forth into the world's highway,
compel the wand'rer to come in.
Toil on, and in thy toil rejoice;
for toil comes rest, for exile home;
soon shalt thou hear the Bridegroom's voice,
the midnight peal, βBehold, I come.ββ
Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) -
"Christ will not come back merely as an appearance; He will come back in His glorified body, and 'every eye shall see Him.'
He will be visible, openly visible."
(from his sermon on Rom. 13.11-14, The Christian's Future)
